Title: Red Wing Hockey
Post by: Skulley on January 26, 2008, 11:05:33 AM
Well Sportsfans, I didn't get a lot of conversation on my Pistons Basketball blog so let's see how many Wings fans are here on GLB (http://www.greatlakesbass.com)???  I myself have been a Wings season ticket holder for about.........well it all started with my Dad....God rest his soul and his love for the Wings.  He and three of his buddies had a contract between each other when they first got these tickets back in the 1950's.  When one of them died, I was about 26 years old.  I, by contract between my Dad and his friends, got the ticket because his friend who passed away did not have a son.  So the ticket went to the first and oldest son of the group.  That would be me.  So I now have my ticket and my Father's since 1998.  The other two tickets are still held by my Dad's friends and who still do go to the games even though they are 84 and 82 years old.  My two tickets get used by me and who ever I feel like taking on any given gameday.  So being the consumate fan that I am........and I do love the Wings ask all you people out there in cyber fishing land, Do you think the Wings can go all the way and win the cup?????

Well, I do.  Here it is the All Star Weekend for Hockey.  The All Star game is Sunday January 27, 2008 which would be tomorrow.  Datsyuk and Zetterberg have been voted in.  Zetterberg however is sitting out with a back injury.  Probably a good move as we are going to need him down the stretch.  The Wings record currently is the best in the NHL.  Can they keep it up?  Historically they have not been able to.  They get into the playoffs with the best record the last two years and choked.

I think this year is different, however the Wings need an "enforcer".  Todd Bertuzzi now with the Mighty Ducks showed us the other night when they played the Wings why we should have kept him.  GM Ken Holland made a mistake when not going after him more actively last summer when they needed to sign someone.  The Wings are definitely going to need someone to protect Datsyuk and Zetterberg.  You just know that teams are going to be gunning for these two guys every game.  It is already starting to happen.  So Wings fans here on GLB (http://www.greatlakesbass.com), what do you think???  Can they do it like I am saying they can, or will this just be another season where the Wings go down in the first or second round of the playoffs???

I like you have been a Wings fan for many years. My family had season tickets at Olympia when I was growing up but reliquished them when they moved to the Joe.
I do believe they are on their way to the Presidents Trophy again. However I have noticed that the European players in the past have not showed they can kick it up a notch in the playoffs. They seem to disapear. I agree that the addition of another enforcer would be valuable, but I don't think it will be enough to carry them through to the Cup.  Besides being out fishing in the spring when the Wings are on TV is very distracting.

We had our tickets at Olympia and we kept them when they moved to the Joe.  I used to go to Olympia with my Dad when one of his buddies couldn't go.  Those were great days.  I saw Delvechio play, Howe play, and some of the other greats from the NHL play at the old "Red Barn" on Grand River Avenue.  I guess we are dating ourselves Dan.

The Wings are the best ticket in town right now and have been for the last few years.  I am so thankful to have been able to be apart of the history.  Nice to be from an original six city.  I don't miss a game home or away.  The Wings are the most watched team in the UAWBigDog household.  The Ford's could take a lesson from the Illitch's on how to build winning teams.......along with a little side lesson from Bill Davison, owner of the Pistons.

The NHL All-Star game is on Versus today at 1800 hours.  It is also on CBET Channel 9 Windsor.  I will be tuning in to see how Lidstrom and Datsyuk play.  I am sure they will make us proud.

Well, the Wings came out hard last night in their first game since the All-Star Game beating the Phoenix Coyotes 3 to 2.  It is funny how the puck bounces in your favor when everything is going right.  I hope it holds up into the playoffs and all the way to the Cup Finals.  It would be nice to have Lord Stanley here in Hockeytown where it belongs.

I"ve been able to find refuse in watching the Wings this winter.
It's about the only thing on TV for my money.

I'd like to see us go all the way, but I just don't know.

I don't know if it's an enforcer that we need, or a bigger defense man, or what.  But, it seems like we get to the play offs, and then it lets down.
But I just love watching them.  Pavel is just amazing.

What's amazing is Zetterberg and him on the same line.  They generate 33% of the shots on goal.  Then you put Lidstrom on the point with Homer (Holmstrom) screening the goalie.  Goals were from Zetterberg, Holmstrom, and Lidstrom the other night.  Who is it going to be tonight.  They are playing Colorado at the Joe.

What I can't believe is the number of empty seats around me the other night.  I wonder how many will be empty tonight??  I can't believe that people don't use their tickets.  Those seats are empty.  No one sits in them.  It has been like that all season.  I think New Years Eve was the only night that every seat was full.  Wings are the best ticket in town.  Pistons are right on their heels.  Why??  Because they win..........consistantly.

I somehow missed this thread.  I live about 4 hours form the Joe, so I don't make it to many games, but my TV sure does.  Been a hockey nut forever.  Played in hundreds of games, watched lots more, but haven;t seen many games more poorly officiated than today's game.  That game was competely decided by the refs.  The on ice play had little to do with the outcome.

As for Bertuzzi, he might be Ok on the ice, but completely worthless as a person as far as I'm concerned.  Anyone who would do what he did has no business alive as far as I'm concerned.

I might be a little frustrated since the game just ended,  but I have hated Bertuzzi for a few years, even when he was with the Wings.  That will never change (maybe until he gets cheap shotted ending his career and nearly his life).

I should certainly hope that the refs are responsible to someone....
I watch 10 - 12 games a week, all year every year and this was the worst officiated game I think I've ever seen.
As far as Bertuzzi goes, if him and Pronger got ran over by a concrete truck it sure would make my day. When Cleary and Pronger got into it out west Pronger continued to pound Cleary long after he was down. What an ass. This past weekend Iginla and Jovanowski got into it and did it as it should be, if you saw it you know what I meen.
I certainly hope the Wings can get to The Cup but I fear that the neutral zone trap and a very physical Western Conference playoffs will ultimately do them in.
Cleary will be sorely missed. Time for Kopecky to step up. Hasek is a time bomb. Time to stick to Ozzie for the duration. Hudler needs to get back in the game. Get Babcock and Cleary signed before it's too late.
Sundin to Anaheim? Forsberg to Vancouver? We need that Burnstrom kid or whatever his name is. Gotta stop now or I'll be here all day.... ;D

Lidstrom is out for at least three weeks.  Somebody will need to cover for him.  Kronwall is practicing again and looks to be ready soon.  Who will step up their game?

Well..........the Wings have lost a couple of more.  I am sure they will be ready to come back to the friendly confines of the Joe Louis Arena.  They are in Edmonton on Tuesday and then they are home at the Joe on Friday against.................the Sharks.  They'll be alright.  They are definitely in need of some serious help.  NOW, is the time the younger players need to step up!!!!   :o

I am afraid it is going to take more than McCarty.  McCarty will add some grit but they need some defense in front of Hasek and Osgood.

DEFENSE? How about some secondary scoring? Filpula, Maltby, Draper, Hudler, Samuelson and our other so-called forward Franzen....have done what in this 1&9 run? Nothing. Keep Draper, dump the rest and find guys that want to play EVERY night.
Doesn't matter anyway. It's the Ducks and that's how it's going to be until the NHL decides to officiate the West in the same way they do the East. Being an NHL official is just like being a weather man, it doesn't matter if you're right or wrong because you are accountable to no one. After your team's been on a PK for a 5 on 3 you have free reign to do as you please because there won't EVER be another penalty called on your team untill we even this out a bit. Nice work if you can get it. NHL officiating is a joke.
Erricson and Meech have done a nice job, Meech will be on somebody's blue line next year.
Given a healthy team, of which is there a very remote chance, my Wings could get by Phoenix or the Avs in 7 but the Sharks or Ducks or Flames...no way, McCarty or not. In their current state of disrepair I doubt they could get by Notre Dame. This is a sad time for Wings fans.

Meech is a defenseman.  That is what I am talking about defense.  Chelios and Lidstrom are hurt.  Cleary is out.........but he is a forward or center.  He has played both.  Where does Erricson play?  He isn't on the roster that is posted on the website Red Wings (http://www.detroitredwings.com).  I am gonna say he is on defense.

And the Wings landed McCarty today.  There's the grit they need.

Erricson is a defenseman. And a huge one! They had to order a larger jersey than the WIngs have ever used before. He looked desent the other night. Seems to have good speed.

He's only been a defense man the last couple of years.

Glad to see McCarty making his way back.

I'm glad to see MaCarty back. He never was the same after he got hurt but you gotta love the guy. Good for him and I wish him the best but you know how it all worked out when the Wings decided to get bigger and tougher with Bertuzzi and Hatcher.
It's going to be interesting to see where Hossa goes now that Sundin has decided not to rent himself out. The Habs I bet!
Won't matter...it's still going to be Anaheim >:(

Nice to see Brad Stuart in a Red Wings uniform.  He did a nice job on Friday night sticking every Shark he could.  Even though the Wings lost, he fit in just fine.  Now, bring McCarty up from Grand Rapids and the Wings have some toughness that they need going into the playoffs.  Chelios will be back in the line up within the week and Lidstrom in two weeks.  The Wings play the Sabres this afternoon.  Should be a good game.

Man those last two games in Nashville were ugly! >:( Hopefully Osgood can bring them back to win the series!

As far as I am concerned I think Osgood should be the goalie the rest of the way.  He has earned it with his stellar play throughout the season.  I think it's the best season he has ever had.  Game 6 Sunday in Nashville will be tough.  Go Wings!!!!!

I'm not a fan of the grind it out, 1 goal game hockey.  But.... it seems that's the game that is being played in this series.

Other than 4 minutes in game 3, about 90 seconds in game 2, and 44 seconds in game 5 the Red Wings have taken the play to Nashville.  The shots on goal differential is huge.  Even when they're in our zone there's a lot of cycling, but not many shots on goal.

They only thing I worry about is getting a big lead, then dropping into that 1-2-2 defense and sitting back.  Nashville gains too much speed through the neutral zone.

The Wings play their best when they take to to the other team.
Don't let up boys, let em have it.
