I realized today after losing to mystery fish yesterday, that I do not like losing them ESPECIALLY when I didn't see what they were.
They haunt me now wondering if they were really big bass and not a dogfish and pike like I suspect!?! ;D
I saw a fish roll like a dogfish yesterday on top so I threw a KVD 1.5 green shad that has been hot on Round Lake. It got ate immediately but the fish dove for the heavy weeds and pulled off in them before I got over there!! !@#$%#@! :) Dogfish and pike tend to dive into the bottom weeds more than bass. The bass on Round usually jump pretty quick. I have caught several really nice bass though after they rolled or surfaced like a dogfish so now I wonder...??
Then later I was worming deep milfoil when I got cracked like a pike does. The fish dove repeatedly under the boat fast like a pike would doubling my spinning rod (was using a lighter rig with 10 pound test) and stripping out drag. On about the 4th or 5th hard dive my line broke (or was cut??)!! @#$%@#$! Noooooo...!
What if is was a big bass full of juice instead of a pike? What if my line broke due to negligence and not adjusting my drag right?!? It was a clean spot break but I couldn't not tell if it cut me off or broke. The line was not scarred up or crimped?
Now, I'll never know... I hate that :)
I'm trying to convince myself neither fish was a bass but part of me is doubtful. I must do a better job next time to not lose them in the first place!!!
I say Russian Submarines on maneuvers in your lake.
I agree with you Dan. The other week I was fishing and had a mystery fish hit so hard it about ripped the pole out of my hand and I had a good grip on it, it hit like a freight train! It bothers me also that I never saw it but suspect a pike.
Probably. ...but then... you never know for sure, do you?!? ;D
i was flipping cattails on the grand a few days ago and got slammed. I was happy i got to see that it was about a 8lb drum. I would have been sick if i would have lost a big fish like that flipping and not seen it.
coincidentally, we caught 2 big channel cats flipping also.....
Rivers are particularly notorious for lots of mystery fish. I've hooked a couple flathead catfish in the Grand over there that really felt like runaway freight trains.
My mystery fish are all state record bass. I'm convinced this is true!
That would really get to me...!!!
