For two days every summer and winter in Michigan, residents and outstate visitors may enjoy fishing on both inland and Great Lakes waters, FOR FREE. All fishing regulations will still apply.
The 2008 winter weekend is February 16 and 17.
Many locations will be holding special fishing events. Take a kid fishing on one, or both, of these weekends and protect your sport.
Here is the latest information from the Michigan Department of Natural Resources on the events:

I read some comments somewhere about how kids always fish for free and we should concentrate on trying to get new adults out fishing on the Free-Fishing weekends....Kind of made sense to me
Yes. Get ANYONE out fishing. It is critical to our long term future that we do what ever we can, no matter how small, to share what the outdoors means to all of us. We can't survive in a completely paved society. We need the woods, the fields, the wetlands and the lakes and rivers.
The purpose of free fishing weekend is to encourage adults who might not otherwise go, to get out fishing, hoping they will takes their kids too (and find out how much fun and enjoyment it can bring).
