Title: Oil vs Gas usage
Post by: stackenem on December 03, 2007, 08:43:56 PM
How much oil does your motor use per tank of gas. How do you know if you are not getting enough or you are getting to much.

That is a great question.  I don't know what mine does.  My oil reserve is probably about a gallon and a half.  I probably go through about 3 to 4 gallons of oil a season.  I have never kept track of how many tanks of gas I use per gallon of oil.  How would you measure that for accuracy???   Hmmmm....... :-\' :-\' :-\'.........especially if you never run the gas tank to empty and just top it off depending on what body of water you fish.

I was just wondering as I was reading some other posts and it seems like some guys use like a gallon per tank of gas and I find that hard to believe. I know that my yamaha 150 uses very little oil but that could be in the way I drive the boat. I haven't had it out on big water and I don't really make any long runs. I only ran about 6 tanks of gas thru my boat last year and used less than a gallon of oil.

personally mine goes through about 1.5 gallon of oil per 1 tank of gas(50 gal). But that is with an old 1996 - 225 HP mercury. Not sure if that is good or bad- never really thought to compare with any one else's, do wonder how that stacks up??

My yammi oil tank holds 11 quarts so 2 3/4 gallons, I have to add over a gallon every tank=58 gallons, I dont think I can run 2 full tanks of gas with 2 3/4 gallons of oil.
my reciepts log says I bought 27 gallons this year and I think theres some more reciepts in my truck that I havent brought in yet.

That makes me wonder if my motor is not getting the right amount of oil.

I used about 2.5 gallons of oil this year and just guessing 7-10 tanks of fuel (35 gal.) with the same motor as stackenem. I think that we are pretty close, even though I always topped off my gas tank so it is hard to tell without looking at all of the receipts floating around my truck that the porter at the dealer so kindly mixed with the gas receipts for the truck last time in there.

It's hard to tell but my best guess would be about 1/2-3/4 gallon per 36 gallon tank on my 150 efi.  I was told my engine would go through the oil when I bought it, but haven't seen it.  It does smoke a lot so I know it's getting in there.  Outside of tournaments I usually don't drive at wot, so that may have something to do with it.  At $20 a gallon I usually stay under $200 a year.

I think most oil injected 2 strokes are set at 50:1.  That means it burns 1 gallon of oil for every 50 gallons of gas used.  the exception to this is the  new E-tec motors, which use a 100:1 setting after break in, although many owners set the computer at 50:1 to be comfortable its getting enough oil.  I know my 225 HO uses exactly 1 gallon per every 50 gallons.
From the numbers below, 50:1 seems to be the case.
