Post by: Durand Dan on August 13, 2007, 07:08:26 AM
Who's going? ??? Checked with Yankee Springs and thier website shows they are all booked up. Any other campgrounds around Gun Lake where I could park a Pop-up?

I'm heading over there in the morning to check the lake out. I think  I'll launch at  Yankee Springs state Park and work my way over to the One on One Launch site. I bought a Hot Spots map to give me some ideas where to start. It looks like an interesting lake. Hopefully I'll get something going. (Although it will be hard to beat my performance at Coldwater) lol  ;D

If you are looking for another campground in the area you can try Deep Lake Campground.  The only bad thing about it is that it's a rustic campground.  It's on Yankee Springs Rd and if you are putting in at Allegan County Park you have to go all the way around the lake.  I think its around 8 Miles from the Allegan launch.  It is wooded and quiet.  Does not seem to fill up.  Another one to try is Rustic Ridge RV Park.  They have restrictions to hardside trailer 10 years and younger unless it passes inspection.  Miller Lake Campground is 1/4 mile south of Rustic Ridge and does not have restrictions.  It is a staight shot on 124th ave about 5 miles to the Allegan County Launch.  Hope that helps.

Left home about 4:30am to make the 90+ mile run to Gun. I was the first one at the State Park to launch. I puttered out to the first drop off and stated throwing a spinner bait back up into a weed bed. In the first 5 or so casts I tagged a Bass that barely measured and a big mean Pike. After that I moved to a couple of ares that the Hot Spots map showed as possible targets. I caught several shorts before I hooked up a nice smallie on a Lipless crank. I got it within eyesight before he spit it. All in all I was successful at what I wanted to accomplish. I think I can get around the lake without tearing my lower end off! Beautiful day, except for the wind.

There is a new campground at exit 59 off of 131.  I  cant think of the name of it but it would make only a 4 mile drive to the county launch in the morning.  They also have their own little private lake that would probably be fun to fish.
