Title: Warning this forum may explode
Post by: djkimmel on April 03, 2015, 08:35:23 PM
Because I'm updating it tonight from the version 1 branch to the version 2 branch. I'll be using the same theme (pretty much... for now...) so it won't look much different. Some of you may not even notice much of a difference. Hopefully you won't notice too much of a difference even if you're in to noticing things...

I have to upgrade soon regardless because the version 1 branch is no longer being supported or updated. Not good in these days of always dancing with the bad guys behind the scenes. I want to keep them behind the scenes... way behind so I need to move up to the version 2 trunk of the forum software.

Eventually I will be done with the new theme and that has to go on version 2 of the forum anyway so here we go tonight with step 1. The easy step for you anyway. We probably won't really explode but there may be a few moments of ugly bumps. Sorry in advance! ;D

Still working on it. No changes yet. So no explosion. There will be some new member settings that some of you may like such as the ability to ignore new posts by certain users. I haven't tested how good it works but I've  been told it works well on a per user basis.

At some point the forum will go in to maintenance mode for a few minutes probably in the morning. It won't last too long. I will appreciate everyone's patience while I get 'er done. Thanks!

Did you miss me?? Sorry it took so long. I still have some house keeping to do with little spots here and there that are missing or need behind the scenes updates but the forum should be fully usable again. It will look a little different to you here or there but most of the same features and functions are there plus new ignore options I may set for everyone once I find and test them a little more. Thanks for your patience!

If you notice your Profile looks different - the menus are at the top by default - and you want them back the way they looked - link menus to the left - click the << button at the top right to shift them back to that look.

How do I get it back to where the oldest post is on top and the newest on the bottom?

There we go... I clicked a button by mistake that I shouldn't have.

You can always go into your Profile >> Modify Profile >> Look and Layout to customize your personal forum settings like this too. So anyone who actually wants the newest posts at the top can do so. You can also force some menus to be sidebars instead of at the top in your Profile.

There's also 'Buddies' and 'Ignore List' features you can add members to under that same area in your Profile. They can allow you to see things better from posters/members you like and the Ignore List will keep you from getting personal messages from people you don't want to see. I thought this was a feature to ignore posts from members too but it's not working that way. I'm still checking into that feature to see how it should work exactly since it's not doing what I thought it would do.

I'm finding out at least some older versions of Internet Explorer browser may not be viewing actual posts and messages correctly. I'm seeing a partial problem with IE 9. If you're having problems with IE can you send me a screen shot and the version of IE you're using. My regular computer only has IE 9 on it and I can't go higher. I don't know if it is all versions of IE or just older versions.

It is displaying properly for me in the latest versions of Chrome, Firefox and Safari including small devices but let me know if you are having viewing problems by including a screen shot (if possible) and the browser and version number you are using. Thanks.

I haven't been able to test in IE 7 or lower yet but there is a forum display bug in IE 8 and IE 9. Not sure yet what the fix is though on your end the simplest fix would be to upgrade to IE 10 or higher if you can, or use a different browser if you can. I'll fix the display issue for IE 8 and 9 if I can figure out what is causing it.

I've played with some settings trying to get IE 9 and older to play nice with the new forum layout and so far I can improve the Posts area of the forum a little without messing up the working browsers any noticeable amount but the personal messages area is still a problem.

Not sure if I can find a solution at this time for all of the out-dated IE version issues. If you can, I recommend you use a different browser - Firefox, Chrome and Safari all handle the code correctly. IE 10 and IE 11 also seem to work correctly.

If you can't upgrade or use a different browser let me know through posting on here so I can get an idea how many people are affected. It it isn't many I may wait until the new theme is done because that one does not have the same issues so far in testing. It won't be ready for a few weeks yet and I still have to have some volunteer testers look it over before I put you all into 'culture shock.' ;D

If you can't read your personal messages hitting reply should take you to a different view where you can read your message easier and decide if you need to reply or do some other action. Sorry for any issues. It's getting harder to stay backwards compatible with older browsers. With all the people now using phones and other small devices I'm trying to make the website (new one anyway) more mobile friendly as I can.
