Title: Am I the only one that thinks a spinnerbait fails to look like a baitfish?

You're not the only one but I do think a spinnerbait looks like a minnow or minnows. Bass have tiny brains... I do like those baits. I've tried all kinds of 'spinnerbait' variations but there's no shortage of new ideas like this to keep trying. Good luck!

I could never understand why they would bite a spinnerbait.  Then I saw an under water film looking up at a school of bait fish.  As they swam along and reflected in the sun they looked an awful lot like a spinnerbait.
And then there's the vibration piece as well.

Under water...... What does a bright blue brush hawg look like?  :P

We all know a bass bites these too... But that don't mean it looks like anything.  :P

I would say it looks like something to eat. I wonder if EVERYTHING looks like something to eat to a bass!?!

They eat worms and nightcrawlers. These are land based and live in the DIRT, not the water.  Yet bass eat them with reckless abandon!

Bass will eat a hot dog too.  How in the world do they know what a hot dog is?  I had 2 hot dogs for lunch today by the way...

Bass will eat other bass... canibals!!!  Wonder if any bass were ever named "Friday?"  (many won't get the movie reference here...)

I have caught many bass on shoelaces...  ;D

Yet they eat butterflies, grasshoppers, crickets, mice, snakes, turtles, birds, ducks, chipmunks, etc... Their daily menu has none of these... Just minners, small panfish, leech's, frogs, etc.

Opportunistic feeders.... No scheduled meals...  ;D

Do any baits really, truly look like something a bass would eat??  Most do not but to them instinct is what triggers strikes.  If they're hungry and it looks like food, chances are they'll bite it.  I think the flash of a blade looks like the flash of a bait fish and that's what I think triggers strikes.  Do tubes look like something a bass would eat in reality??  I don't think so but the colors of the tube may look like something they have eaten before and as a result a strike is triggered.  This is a phenomenon that hasn't really been scientifically explained clearly but we all have our theories on why.  I'm with DK on the ego and "we're supposed to be smarter than them" thing.  But I try to remember that bass live in a world where instinct rules and if their instinct tells them it's food and they need to eat, well by gosh, they are going to strike.  I think crank bait patterns look more like food to them than anything just by the size and shape and patterns.  The Live Target Bait Ball gets my vote on the most real looking lure out there.  It actually looks like a school of bait.  If I was a bass, I'd eat that.   :o
