I Fished both Long and Grand Lake this weekend despite the boat/deer accident. I didn't fish the Alpena tourney like I wanted, but I got on the water and had a pretty good time anyway. I caught and saw quite a few smallies. I didn't catch as many as past trips, but I was just basically looking at water for next weekends club tourneys. My 4 year old daughter caught a smallie just over 18 inches that destroyed her snoopy pole. I guess it is time for her to graduate to a better rod.
I don't think the fish on those lakes are in full spawn yet. I am far from an expert on spawning smallmouths, but I didn't see alot of spawning activity shallow. I saw alot of fish moving around in 3-4 foot of water, but they weren't holding tight to beds. I charted alot of fish in 7-9 foot of water, but It was hard to hold to spots on the main lake because of the wind. I never caught a fish in the deeper water.
I am sure that the guys that fished the Alpena tourney caught some pretty big bags. I have been trying to find a report online to see how they did.
Anyone got any info?
I was there. Nothing special........same as usual. Lots of limits and 25Lbs won.
BS ;)
On the weast side up here by Traverse City the bass are in a full on spawn . The full moon really picked up the bedding. All but the deep cold lakes are seeing lots of big smallies protecting beds. They Walleyes have really picked up too. I boated over a dozen on my home lake of Birch in about 3 hours. Most were small with 2 keepers tossed in there for the next mornings breakfast with eggs. The bay is starting its spawn also. Been a tad ruff out there lately for a bassboat ,so I havent been out there , but friends eye and trout trollin have givin me words about what they saw. Lots of sore mouths on fish up here too. The catch has been slow even though you see good numbers.
