My family is renting a cabin for a week in mid august on lake Missaukee in lake city. I've read a few good things about the fishing on google but didn't find much about the bass. Anybody ever fish this lake? Looks like a fun lake to learn
Fish that lake every year in our NBAA division. Be prepared to catch a bunch of undersized bass and there is an obscene amount of pleasure boat traffic on that lake. Not my favorite lake to fish with Houghton and higgins 20 minutes down the road. Learning it will take all of 10 minutes. There is one side along M66 that is deep, to 25 feet. The rest is 5 foot and full of choking weeds. There are walleyes in the lake, but personaly, I feel, that it is an over pressured lake with people keeping everything they catch in it.
Fishinpollock is right about the boat traffic. I fish the cannals for large mouth. In the early spring the lake can produce some smallmouth. Pike are mixed in all òvèr the lake look for the deep holes for walleyes.
fish early and you'll be fine. enjoy the water the rest of the day. I've caught some decent smallies on poppers on the island humps and on the large flat over by the dairy queen. Caught a few walleye there by accident also on a tube. This was august time frame. Thats about all i know.
Thanks for the info guys
I lived on that lake, just down from the beach. Never did I fish it, but there was always a ton of boats out there. I worked 3rd shift and was always woken up to the sound of a guy with a big block powered jet boat revving it as high as he could right in front of my place. Isn't there a deep trench that runs through that lake on one end?
I had a fishing partner who liked to go there years ago for smallies. I felt the smallies a little farther north averaged bigger and were more plentiful, but he had a cabin near Higgins so it was a nice diversion for him when time was limited. There are a few members on here who have fished there a fair amount in the past.
I may check it out someday, but probably during the week. Hard to not keep going farther North to smallmouth bass nirvana (Traverse City to Alpena in my book) but... we can't always go farther, and sometimes the wind howls a little too much on Houghton and Higgins.
Good thing we have so many great choices! Good luck and make sure you tell us how you do!
I won't have a problem avoiding the boat traffic,I'll be up early everyday. Hopefully during the week the traffic will slow down and I will have a chance to fish the middle of some days. My grandparents had a place on this lake back in the 60s so that's why we choose Missaukee. We wanted to take them back, plus the beaches on the lake look awesome and the little ones in my family will love that.
I did find a few results from tournaments in the past and the bags weren't huge but some decent numbers with big bass normally around 4lbs
It's a good lake. We are spoiled in Michigan with our abundant water resources so our good lakes, that are awesome to many other people, don't seem as good as they really are depending upon how you compare them. I'm sure you'll have fun and catch some nice bass. Your bonus family plan makes it a really good plan. Have fun!
