Post by: motocross269 on March 06, 2007, 04:34:02 PM
I was reading on another forum about BPS hooks...They were basically saying they are junk..Anyone have any experience with them..I bought some BPS Trailer hooks and worm hooks...Should I pull them out out and put them in my practice box???

i use a lot of red ewg worm hooks. they are fine. I use gammies for the bigger sizes but the BPS are fine too. Only thing to remember is that bps worm hooks run a size smaller than actual

ie BPS 2/0 is actually a 1/0 and so forth.

They are not nearly as sharp as gammis and don't last as long.  Not complete junk, I use them when I have to.

I think Owner has the sharpest hooks for my money, I have been through BPS,Gamakatsu, Mustad, Eagle Claw, and Daiichi. I don't think you can find a sharper hook. I noticed the BPS hooks are smaller too I don't know what their thinking is with that. It may be to throw off the consumer to make it harder to tell who actually makes it.

I think the BPS hooks are fine.  Just buy them a size bigger.  I've noticed that several manufacturers have a diffent view on what a particular size should be.  Compare Gamikatsu and Mustad..their sizes don't seem to be same either in some cases.  I have noticed the finish on BPS red hooks wears off easier, but other than that, the hooks seem just as strong, though perhaps not as sharp.  Hone 'em and you're fine IMO.  I've never had one break while landing a fish.  Personally though, I really like the Mustad Ultra Point hooks.

I kinda remember someone telling me that VMC makes the BPS hooks.  Dont quote me on that, tho.

The red does wear off fast, as mentioned before.  ANd they dull very easily, as also mentioned.  And they are small, again, already mentioned.

I have never had one break on me.  I have caught a lot of fish on them. So i wouldnt say they are junk.  they just arent 'premium' hooks.  But then, your not paying a premium price for them. They are nice to have as backups incase you run out of Gammies or whatever you use.  Tuck a 25 pack of 4/0s in your glovebox of your boat.  they come in handy.  Or, just buy what you trust.
