Title: Major League Fishing (MLF) heading to Alpena
Post by: Dan on August 24, 2013, 09:03:52 PM
Next week in an inland lake yet to be publicized the Major League Fishing show will be filmed. The lake is going to be near Alpena. As of today the anglers fishing the show don't know the name of the lake. All they know is that is near Alpena. They will be there all next week. Filming starts Monday.

Then it pretty much has to be 1 (or 2) of 4 lakes.

...and those lakes are?? Not familiar with that area.

Well, I have no inside knowledge but it is pretty easy to see the choices by looking at Google Earth or maps. They probably aren't going to put them on small lakes. It would be real interesting to see them on Thunder Bay but they may shy away from the risk of storms and reefs risky enough to be an underwater ship museum preserve...??

I could list the lakes, but then I feel like some kind of spoiler even though I would only be listing the obvious choices not anything I've heard or know. They are are a careful, sneaky bunch. There is always the chance they would completely come out with a curve ball? I would actually like that. Who doesn't like surprises.

I like surprises so I look forward to other people speculating and/or leaking details... some people like leaking. I did get a feeling there were things going on this weekend that everyone wasn't in on but it could have just been getting up at 4am too... I did not know it involved surprises... cool!

I was thinking something like that was really what I should be saying... good job! Now, lets try to get more of this stuff.

I'm getting a little pushback from people who think St. Clair had 'too much' bass fishing this spring but I can remember the late 1990's when I saw as many or more 'bass' and incidental anglers (I will leave it up to the mind readers to determine who was who) fishing in the spring. Yet we still have lots of smallmouth bass. Bass are still the 3rd most sought species on Lake St. Clair with walleye and perch fishing efforts significantly higher.

I was told that the MLF wasn't going to be on the Great Lakes at or near Alpena. It is suppose to be on an inland lake. Maybe more than one. We'll see. They start filming tomorrow. Saw Ish heading that way at about 8:30 this morning and Biffle is still here at this motel as well as KVD. They're heading north soon. The whole KVD family was here at this hotel this weekend. KVD was in the breakfast room this morning when I got back from the take off. He didn't look happy. I was really disappointed that the Detroites and East Siders to show up to support BASS more than they did. At the All Star event, we'll have twice the number of people that they have had here.

Would probably be Grand and Long if I was a betting man!

I sure hope we have a huge turnout for Allstar Week. Would be nice to see Muskegon get something right for a change.

As for MLF, can't wait to see the new shows!

Making sense now! I was fishing Long this morning and saw 2 wrapped Nitro's cruising up and down the whole length of the lake all morning but never seen them even drop the troller, I figured they were breaking new motors in or something. Then heading home driving through town I saw several truck and boat rigs all dressed out in the parking lot of Holiday Inn and at one of the restaurants and passed another on 23 heading north. So my vote is Long also

Interesting.  I'm up on Hubbard this week.  There were 4 or 5 wrapped Nitros running around here this morning.  I also thought they were breaking in new motors as they ran up and down the shore line but never fished.  Guess they too are trying to figure out which lake they will need to be familiar with.

Two lakes makes more sense. Long and Hubbard would be interesting. They might find Hubbard a real puzzle this time of year. But worth it. Guess we will all find out. Michigan bass - the place to be!

Pretty much all the anglers would probably like to still be fishing on day 4. Pretty much everyone also said they always draw less people from large metro areas. I did enjoy the bigger crowds yesterday and today, and the spirit they demonstrated. Hurt my eardrums a couple times. Great to see lots of GreatLakesBass there both days! I didn't run into everyone who was there but one way or another I heard from or about most who came down and shared the fun!

Now, you dropped the gauntlet. Make sure you bring it! I want B.A.S.S. to come back soon and a really good showing never hurts!

Three lakes might be even better than two, and all three mentioned might very well be them...   :-X

I haven't seen all the episodes so I wasn't sure if they would do that but that would be a more interesting challenge. There is actually one more lake they could throw in that would really stir things up! I hope they do that personally.

I actually like the curve balls involved in bass tournament fishing. Maybe not always on the day it was happening but usually later. Sometimes learn the most valuable lessons when tested the most.

Great choice for Labor day weekend...Those lakes get very little pressure compared to some other lakes on the Holidays...Lots of fun ways to fish on Grand...Make sure you stop at the Hideaway bar for a Hoagie and some fries... ;D If you have any boat issues Thunder bay Marine is great.

My inlaws live on Long lake. I will have to give them a call.  Long lake could fish fairly small so If it was up to me I would choose Grand for the MLF...

Well, I guess if they wanted to keep it quiet they aren't doing a really good job of it.

maybe you have all seen this by now but as reported by MLF, this will be the first time the format will include multiple lakes.....will be interesting to see how they pull it all together.   talked to a guy I know yesterday that works boat patrol for the Presque Isle County Sheriff and patrols Grand Lake, he is taking his kids over today to meet some of the guys, said it had been in the papers for a couple of days (Alpena, PI Advance as DK pointed out) so good they are promoting it a bit.  Overall he said the town seems excited to have them up there.

Yes, I think most of the 'secret' will be out other than maybe how wins which is fine. It is really fine that it is promoting Michigan bass fishing and bass tournaments more. We need to take more steps forward to solve some issues that have only hurt fishing in general in Michigan so I really appreciate all these events in Michigan!

Sounds like me on my last trip to Fletchers! ;D  Fishing relaxes me, but that place spike my blood pressure 100% with the constant worry of damage.

Where should I worry about prop damage on grand?

Hit Grand for the first time today.  If you have a LakeMaster chip and watch it closely you shouldn't have any issues.  I have Navionics on the front and it didn't show some of the danger zones that LakeMaster did, and I can confirm the LakeMaster chip was accurate.  There were definitely shallow rock piles but nothing that couldn't be seen on the LakeMaster map.  Good luck.

Just wait for a sunny day around noon, put on some polarized sunglasses  and dodge the brown spots thats all I can say. same goes for Long Lake- probly the lowest i've ever seen it. I was afraid to dock my boat- in the same Spot i've docked for over ten years

That makes it a little more challenging. If you have a tournament, you usually end up with wind and stirred up water as a welcome present, it usually seemed to me.

I know both lakes pretty well now but this is the best way to know for sure...

Lakemaster and Navionics do not show ALL the reefs and underwater humps...

I hope everyone will take some time to come over to Muskegon September 27-29! Make sure you say hi to me too! I missed a number of GreatLakesBass.com members at the Elite Series. It was a big area with lots going on!
