Last year the last week of Feb. I was fishing Center Hill Lake in Tenn. How far South do I need to go to fish in the next couple of weeks? I can't it it any more!
I've heard there are a few guys going down to Birmingham, Al. The say the spots are biting on the Coosa River system.
After that cold snap we had, probably north-central Kentucky/Tennessee to find open water (I'm guessing). Maybe Ohio River? Iffy probably and not real good fishing sometimes. I wonder if Patoka is open?
Patoka is not ready yet, my father-in-law has been ice fishing in a state park near Patoka the last two weekends and there is still 10 iches of ice on the lakes he is fishing. I am guessing all the creeks on Patoka are still frozen.
I have fished Lake Cumberland in Kentucky in early March and have done quite well. It has an excellent smallie population and some real toads. It is a real fickle lake so no guarantees. If the smallies don't want to go, just about any main lake point before going back into a creek will hold a load of spots. Most of them are 12-15 inches, but you can catch a ton of them. There are some good spots, but I have never found a cluster of them. Also, near Nashville is Old Hickory. It is a decent bass lake and has a steam plant which discharges warm wter into the lake via a large canal. You can have some awesome days around that canal and on into the lake. There is also potential for a monster striper. I caught a 30 pounder two years ago while bass fishing it. The Ohio River is probably flowing too strong and muddy to do any good, but if I went that far I would defintiely go a couple extra hours. Our lakes here in NE Indiana have 10-18 inches of ice on them and will not open up til at least mid to late March. If you need any information, on any lake south of the Ohio let me know, I have been on a few of them and I will help you out if I can. God Bless and Good Fishin'!
