Title: Going to finally learn DS
Post by: Big dreams on July 09, 2013, 09:09:29 AM
After much scrutiny :)  I am finally going to learn how to drop shot (or at least spend a day trying).  This Friday I am taking the wife out and am taking one, and only one, rod with me.  Special thanks to Laporte for helping rig it up correctly!

Just remember as the great Seth Valentine once told me "you know Don they don't have hands"... lol  You are going to be hooked... I want to see some pics...

If you get bored, be like Mojo and drop shot some frogs.  I heard Don caught a nice bass drop shotting a craw trailer...

I aopologize for high jacking this thread but for those of you that do a lot of dropshotting, what kind of ds wt do you use most often- round, cylinder, teardrop? I've used several kinds and haven't seen much difference re how often I get snagged. I lost a round and a cylinder style this weekend. I also crawled a football jig & hardhead/biffle bug around in the same areas & got hung up a few times but was able to break loose.

Thanks,
Rob

you have the right idea with one rod all day.   rig one up for the wife.   That is all i let my wife do now.  Just have her cast it out and slowly reel it in.

Nothing easier than a worm on a hook with a weight at the bottom.

It's all to simple
But a great way to put fish in the boat

For weights
i myself like the round balls, I get a better feel
Mostly use a 1/4 oz, The tug. weights are nice. The 1/4 is the same size as the 3/16 lead
But there pricey and the pike like the rigs, So I stick it out with the lead

You should really come to the frog only event.  Last year was dismal and some of us got desperate...

Heck, I spend most of my time on the water drop shotting.   ;D  It's my favorite technique (as most of you know).  I pour my own weights, I lose a lot due to snags and pike so it saves me a lot of money.  I have the do-it mold that makes the pencil/cylinder style.

I like 3/16 tear drop mainly because I can buy them at Northwoods outlet for $1 a pack! I just started ds this season and find myself having a hard time putting it down. I got my biggest fish of the year on ds. Also I have been using owern mosquito hooks I am been favoring size 1. What brand/ Kind and size hooks are you guys using?

You need to know
While all hooks have a size
There's no std. So a Gam hook might be larger or smaller then a Owner
I like a Gam 1/0 DS hook, With that I can fish small worms, Sinko's and 3-4" goby's

Dropshotting? Not very productive. I hate dropshotting, especially in June, July, and August on St. Clair. ;)

St Clair sound like to much work for me.  Good fishing but weather dependant.  Does not have to be Kent but an inland lake to me is easier.  Cass is great later this year.  Could do it on white lake in highland and meet at the White lake Inn at lunch.

Maybe fish 3 hours come in and weigh what ya got.  Have lunch ( every one brings there own )  then back out for 3 hours to do it again.  4.00 entry fee with 1 dollar for most weight and 1 for big bass for each session.

Just thinkin

Vince is right DS on st-clair is the worst.  May is also a bad month.  I think in the DK open we only got 99% of our fish on DS.  Hardly worth it.

I'm with dartag
while LSC is a blast

Planning weeks ahead you don't know about the weather
were on a inland lake the weather won't stop a thing

I've done well on Cass, Kent or White DS'ing
All good lakes.

I never thought I would learn how to drop shot, but after spending a day on the water with dartag, he has got me hooked!! Great way to catch big ones, especially on pressured water

This DS event only sounds like a fun time, I'd like to see this happen

I'd love to do a dropshot only event... but $5 entry would not even be worth putting the boat in the water, even for fun.

I am at the restraunt now with the wife.  Going to eat and head back out.  So far...  2 hours into this and I have one 3 lber and two dinks.  I just caught the 3 lber on my last cast.  Going to try another area to see how it works in a different scenario.  I will post pics when I get home :)

There are times when my partner thinks I'm shaking the rod tip too much... then I catch a 4+ pounder and he just agrees with me.   ;D  There are other times when the wind/wave action moves the bait enough that I don't have to.   Only the fish can tell you which is better in each situation.

Laport, find sharp weed edges associated with drop offs and fish it right up against or even a little into the weeds.  Deep docks (and even shallow docks) can also be a great place.  I love deep dock pilings!!!  By deep I mean 3' or more.

As for baits... I like Zoom trick worms, Nemesis gobies (even where there are no smallies), the KVD Dream Shot (got a 4.84 kicker in a tourney last night on it), and Poor Boys darters.  That's pretty much all I throw on the DS.

Not sure what they are.  Don hooked me up with a few extras he had.  They are pretty good whatever they are.

Here are a few pics.  Not sure if they would have bitten on other soft plastics but the hook up ration can't be beat.  It was almost too easy.

I used a few things today.  I tried Yum Wooly Bugs which produced the biggest fish of the day.  I tried some Net Bait craws and got a couple.  I found that the most important thing for me to be a successful drop shotter is boat positioning.  With the slight wind and waves on Wixom today, I had a hard time keeping the boat lined up and from drifting.  Once I was able to get the boat under control, the rest was easy peasy.  I can finally respect what a power pole can do for you now.  Still not worth the 1500 to me but I get the idea.

If you get a chance check out poor boy baits, the Erie darter. They are excellent around our lakes especially in the mango magic colors. Also case plastics make an awesome drop shot worm

You can get a powerpole for a lot less than $1500.  A lot less.

I guess so lol. I ran track at CMU and things weren't working out with the coach unfortunately, so i decided to leave (along with 4 others). MSU was happy to pick me up. Bummer leaving the CMU bass club as president, but track helps pay for school.

Once a long time ago. The 'boat ramp' is only a canoe/kayak launch lately. The water might be up a little this year but it would have to go up a long, long ways for me to get my boat in there again. I'd need 4-wheel drive too.

The main lake basin is not real productive from what I saw. The 'secret' spot was always a hidden bayou that some guys would run to on plane through a narrow cattail channel. Even when I got my boat on through the little ramp, there was no way I was trying to run that channel and risk getting stuck. Or running over some canoe/kayaker around a bend in the cattails/weeds?!?

From the water level last year, I'm not sure if you can get anything through that channel unless the water is up now. I might give it a try again someday if I get a small boat but it isn't an all day kind of lake.

If the latest satellite views are recent, it looks like the water is up and you could maybe launch a small boat there and even possibly get to the 'secret' bayou. Don't know if it is worth it now? One of these days I'll take a day trip out there to see how it looks but my boat isn't going in there.

The river is easy to fish. All rivers are easier to fish, I think. First, I have to get my truck fixed - two things broke now (battery completely dead, won't take a charge - I must have something causing a drain). Then go get my boat. Maybe, next week I can take a look at my truck? Not my area of expertise...

If you remind me enough, maybe we can get on the river one of these days. It's not St. Clair awesome, but I enjoy fishing rivers.

I'm no different than anyone - I don't like to give away my 'secret' spots but Round Lake is a pretty good lake. Pay ramp at the party store and they rent boats too from dawn til dusk. I didn't get out there last year but it was pretty good the year before and real good the year before that.

Park Lake has a public ramp. Fun to fish once in a while though the fishing was off a little last time I went there - lots of small bass. I've caught good bass and pike there a few times.

Lake Lansing is a busy, busy lake in the summer, especially on the weekends. I like it in the spring and fall once in a while. I have got out there during the week on quieter days and there are nice bass, lots of pike and some catfish in the lake. Some local anglers did their own private smallmouth stocking - something I ask people not to do - so once in a while you catch a long, skinny smallmouth out there too.

Lately, the Grand River (Lansing) is fishing even better than recent years. This year I'm seeing more vegetation than I've ever seen. There is almost a (visible) continuous weedline all the way through the river. I'm seeing weed growth in areas that I've never seen weeds in the past. Needless to say, fishing the weed edges will pay off. I should mention that the fish I've caught from these areas are fat and very healthy, with 15"-16" fish weighing in the 2 lb. range.

Dan, the Lake Lansing smallmouth have actually taken very well. There have been several spawning classes over the past several years, with very healthy smallies being weighed in almost every tournament. Last week I caught one on the very first cast (about 2 lbs.) but lost it at the boat. I ended up catching another later in the evening that weighed in at just under 3 lbs. It was NOT skinny at all. I've seen smallies in the 4 - 5 lb. range weighed in.

Not justifying the practice, just saying that it seems to have worked in this case.
