See this update on this event: http://www.greatlakesbass.com/forum/index.php?topic=16038.msg104183#msg104183 - I can't make it but Waterfoul has volunteered to be 'interim tournament director' for this event. There will be a few differences but those who want to fish are welcome and encouraged to please still attend and enjoy some Michigan bass fishing.
Open to all registered GreatLakesBass.com members only - register on this forum to become a member - no deadline to join.1
Format is draw tournament with boater and nonboater fishing as a team. 5 biggest bass 14 inches or longer (mouth closed) between team members will be weighed to determine finish. Please take good care of your bass with working livewells.
*Biggest non-bass fish brought in to weigh wins the coveted BIG UGLY prize! Fish must be in season and legally caught to count.
1Please note:
Family members may be able to fish together. Please contact me directly by PM (http://www.greatlakesbass.com/forum/index.php?action=pm;sa=send;u=1), phone 810-433-BASS (2277) or email (http://glbass.com/contact) to arrange this. I would prefer family members 18 and older be a registered member of GreatLakesBass.com. I will not request that of family members under 18 and prefer not to have family members under 13 register due to federal regulations. If you have a family member that wants to fish but not be a member, please just contact me privately prior to the event. Youth 17 years or younger must be participating with a parent or legal guardian. Exceptions to this will need to be discussed with me in advance. Use the contact information above.
GENERAL INFORMATION
Nonboaters please bring life jackets to make sure we have enough. Life jackets must be worn zipped and/or buckled whenever the gas motor is running. Boater must use working kill switch when gas motor is running.
No live bait, artificials only. A Golden Rule courtesy board will be available at the weigh in. You can use your own weigh in bag.
I try to make sure there are as few boats as possible with no one that knows the water. I can have a mini-seminar before we launch on where to fish for people who ask for it. This is an event where we want to see everyone catch some fish!
This event is all about everyone catching some fish, having fun and getting to know each other, and also to honor the memory one of our greatest members - David MadWags Wagensomer!!! Thank you for being members of GreatLakesBass.com.
If you have anything new or like new you'd like to donate for prize giveaways, please contact (http://glbass.com/contact) me.
Post that you are attending, and if attending as a boater or nonboater in this thread please. It is easier for me to keep track if your status is in this thread. Thanks!
*Note: Special trout regulations apply to parts of Manistee Lake, the channel to Lake Michigan, the Manistee River and Little Manistee River. There is also a fishing closure for a small part of the very south end of the lake / Little Manistee River. See the map and information on another post in this thread for this area and also for the boundary limit for anglers fishing this event. Also, see the latest Michigan fishing guide (http://michigan.gov/fishingguide) for more information.
I'm in on this one too. I will go out on a limb and say boater, especially if my boat doesn't go to LSC in May.
In as a non-boater.
I'll remember to request the day off this time and be there as a boater. Plan on girlscanfishtoo being with me.
i'm in as a boater, where ever it may be, can't wait to fish some beds next fall hahahaha
I'm in, lets say nonboater for now. will change if needed.
I'm in and can bring the boat or ride along, as needed. Looking forward to hearing the chosen lake! :)
Where are we fishing? I thought I saw Muskegon? Just kidding.
I'm ready with my usual partner.
Hi Ma!
As mentioned, I've changed to date forward to the next Sunday, October 6 due to the pleasant and unexpected surprise of gaining the Toyota All-Star Week in Muskegon on our previous week/weekend. I expect to be at the Bassmaster event for most of the event doing media. I imagine some of you want to be there too.
I hope the date change doesn't mess too many people up but I want a big turnout for both events so we won't go head-to-head! ;D
I'm leaning towards Manistee Lake right now due to votes and being new or like new for the event. Are there enough spots for everyone to catch some bass? Will we have to rotate in and out of Ed and Mike's spots?!? :)
Manistee Lake sounds good to me
So, that's 1 more vote? :)

as a scout, i must tell you i already voted for manistee ;D
I was hoping you would just run with my comment but I understand. I was a webelos (whatever that is??).
Hmmmmm I was planning on attending (even though I hadn't posted it) but now I'll have to check the calender concerning my trip to Burt/Mullett
It's on your way...?
I couldn't keep it the weekend before. No way I'd be able to get ready and make it there while All-Star Week is going on too. I'd rather have people attend that. I want to have more of them!
Oh, I understand Dan. Just didn't understand at first until I read further. Was thinking it was an earlier date. LOLOLOL I may have to shift my plans for Burt and Mullet a day or two. If the weather looks good, I might even see if my wife wants to fish it. :)
Hey! Great idea! Last fall, a husband and wife team won!
I can't make it out to this one with the date change. Have a wedding to attend for a good friend

Have the ceremony on your boat!
Groomnap him and take him fishing. In later years he will be grateful.

Another great idea!! The groom is actually from Boston and has never fished for bass. I could probably blow his mind with the smallie fishing up north ;D
I was groomnapped once. Some people were not real happy with that. Sorry about messing up your plans. I'll try to avoid surprises next year that cause a schedule change. Tough to squeeze something in on that side of the state.
Put me down for 2 people. Net man extroidinaire Ron Ihrig will be making the trip up with me! Looking for some smallmouth action for sure.

BOUNDARY OFF LIMITS and MDNR CLOSED WATER, SPECIAL REGS | SATELLITE MAP OF MANISTEE LAKE Here's an overhead picture of all of Manistee Lake. Please remember that drop shotting without at least a 3" long unweighted dropper line to the hook is not allowed in Manistee Lake and the rivers. See the two inset blow up images below for our tournament boundary limit (Inset #1), and the approximate location of the complete fisheries closure in effect due to MDNR trout and salmon regulations (Inset #2).

LAKE MICHIGAN CLOSED - BOUNDARY LINE SHOWN BELOW (Inset #1) (http://www.greatlakesbass.com/forum/gallery/1_25_07_13_4_28_04.jpeg)
Fishing is off limits past a line drawn from the end of each pier head out in Lake Michigan as shown approximately in the image above. Fishing only inside the pier heads back into Manistee Lake.
MDNR SALMON - TROUT FISHING CLOSURE BOUNDARY (Inset #2) (http://www.greatlakesbass.com/forum/gallery/1_25_07_13_4_35_05.jpeg)
From MDNR 2013 Fishing Guide (http://michigan.gov/fishingguide): Closed to Fishing - Sep. 6 - Oct. 15 or whenever the established quota of chinook eggs are taken - The southern end of Manistee Lake in the vicinity of the mouth of the Little Manistee River, being that area of Manistee Lake south of a line drawn from a squared red post, located 100 feet southeast of the launch ramp at the DNR Public Access Site on the east shore, extending southwesterly to a squared red post on the west shore located near the southern end of the Packaging Corporation of America plant.
During the October 6, 2013 MadWags Memorial Members Tournament fishing will not be allowed south/east past this line (location on map is approximate). |
That leaves almost 3 miles of Manistee Lake, the channel to Lake Michigan to the pier heads and the Manistee River to fish. Make sure you are aware that special trout and salmon regulations also apply to these waters. Refer to the 2013 MDNR Fishing Guide (http://michigan.gov/fishingguide) for official summary description of the various regulations covering trout, salmon and gear restrictions for our tournament waters. Thanks.

Ron does not have one. He's not very computer savy, but I'm working on it!
Ok, fer soem reason. My computer will nottttttttttttttt open up a PDF file so I can get a map of the lake. How bout a little help here getting on for your ole buddie Fish?????? ;D
What PDF are you trying to open? Is it a PDF to Polish translation issue?!? ;D
Try this website (http://www.charts.noaa.gov/OnLineViewer/14938.shtml). Waterfoul's 'spot' is already marked...
Ed Dyer's spots are not marked. Just saying. Manistee is fun. I was there right becore the spawn, unfortunately. Not knowing anyone there, and not knowing water temps kinda sucked, but we caught a ton of smallies and a nice walleye......in the rain. I'm uncertain on whether I will be attending thisnone or not. Two weekends off in a row may be hard to swing at work. I will wait till closer to that day to say yes or no.

Oh, but I have a lot more spots!!
Haven't even seen that lake this year. As busy I am not sure when I might be able to get up there.
Count me in as a boater. :)
Change in plans, I will not be able to make it this year.
That's a bummer. cameraguy was nice enough to volunteer to do a participant list so I will update that and get it posted probably tomorrow.

Hey !!!!! You promised me some salmon fishing !!!!! Sorry to hear you won't be making it Billy !!!
This would be an event where anything could be on the end of your line.
Oh, for sure!! I was on Manistee last November with Waterfoul and got a big steelhead on an xr50, with a 7' medium action Carrot Stix and a Revo MGX. What a fight! Then a few weeks later, I cracked a Laker on PM Lake. Not a fight at all. Just goes to show, you never know.
I'd love to go wack a bunch of those steelies for a day. That was the best fight I have ever had on a bass rod, hands down.

We have the summer run steelhead here in town Mike. The return has been fantastic but the water is still way too warm for them to bite very well. Should be a great fall. I always us a 7' medium action baitcaster and in-line spinners for them. Lots of fun. Some people describe them as smallies on steroids. The summer run tend to be a little smaller than the Michigan Winter run but not any less of a fight. :)
I'm withdrawing myself from this event. Too far to drive and just can't afford the trip this year.
that make two of us, i'm sorry wont be making the fall Mad Wags this year. i will be thinking of you guys, wack some pigs and drive careful on the way home. :(
Oh come on guys, it's an hour closer than last year! And the fishing is better.
if it was saturday it wouldn't be a concern
8 hours of driving for 6 hours of fishing. Not for me. Hope you all have fun and catch them. I will be on a local lake somewhere in oakland county.
You need to make a weekend fishing trip out of it if you're coming from far away. There are a LOT of other lakes up there, within 30 minutes of Manistee that fish great too. Check out the results from our Portage Lake tourney Sunday. BIG fish there!
don't forget you can go catch salmon in the lake or on the river if that's your thing. portage, arcadia, pierre marquette, hamlin, betsie bay...... all awesome.
that being said, i found out we'll be having my SIL and nephew in town for the weekend, so my chances of making it are slim unfortunately unless my wife decides to kick me out or something (which is always possible).
Sorry - I'm out ...
Bring the nephew Justin.

Justin, I'm sure you can come up with something to tic her off !!!! LOLOL :)
Blame me Dude. I can take it, or ya can always blame Jeff . It is what I do ;D
thought about it, but he's definitely not ready for 6hrs in the car, 8 in the boat and all on an Oct day in mich. hopefully i'll get to take him around here for a few hours.
For one, you must drive slow. 4 hours total in the car. And it's a 6 hour tournament. Easy! See you there!
its 2hrs just to ludington from here go 5 over the speed limit the whole way. i have to take back roads to get to the lake shore or go down into GR and then take 96. splitting hairs however
Yeah, I guess I actually do have a more direct route than you do... Couple of freeways and we're there!
Ok wow been a long long time since I've been here. Life has changed some for me. But my Hubby and I would love to join you all if you don't mind? We prefer to fish together but will do the draw and terry would be the boater so someone else would be stuck with me! And I haven't been able to fish like I used to. (new job)
It takes me an hour and a half to get there. Neener neener!!
Talked to Ron yesterday, he's in. He's never been there before and doesn't get a chance to fish for smallies very often so he's looking forward to it.
Are we having hotdogs or anything after the weigh in?
I'm in boater. Any decent places to stay? I checked out the campground at the northern part of the lake. Insta camp or whatever its called. Any good? Or any hotels you local guys recomend that are boat friendly?
not gonna make it this year >:(
I want to go, but can't. All of a sudden I have to get the surgery done on my dog's other leg. There goes $4000. Not happy at all.
I am pretty sure Doug Gray and his wife are in.
How many boats we going to have Dan, now that Mike S. can't make it?
I would go, but Mike Ozinga will be fishing all of my spots. That lake isn't big enough for the two of us.
I'll leave you one or two Ed
*Change in plans for this year only - I can't make the October 6 fall west MadWags Memorial tournament. Waterfoul has volunteered to be interim tournament director this Sunday since he still wants to go fishing there with his fishing partner Ron I.
I will post the last known list of anglers I knew were coming and leave it up to Waterfoul and you all to decide who can still make it and how much you want to have for an entry, etc.
I've unfortunately not been able to line up sponsor prizes for this fall event due to other responsibilities and I apologize for that to those of you who were still coming. If you have something to bring please let Waterfoul know.
I explained some things to the members who were already on the list and I thank them for their gracious responses. The MadWags Memorial tournaments have never been about formal, super competitive bass fishing, but more about comradery and everyone having some fun. And also now in memory of David 'MadWags' Wagensomer since we no longer have the pleasure of his new and usually inciteful, entertaining participation. You can all still meet those goals this one time without me. Please check out the list and let Waterfoul know if you are still coming or not.
