Title: Flipping
Post by: stackenem on November 29, 2006, 09:31:44 PM
I am looking for a new flipping reel. what are some of your favorites with what rod and line. I am using a 7ft heavy St. Croix with a shimano reel not sure what model with 30lb fireline and I am not real happy with this combo. What do you use?

stack - are talking pure flipping? Or pitching? Or a combination of both?

The best reel I have used for strictly pitching/flipping is the Shimano Castaic SF.

Good reel, but you might try another line. The P line braid isn't stiff like the fireline and flows off the spool smooth.

You'd be hard pressed to talk Stack out of his fireline.... but I like Power Probetter.   Braid isnt necessary in all flipping/pitching situations either.  A good fluoro can get the job done nicely and cast smoother.

I'm looking at the Shimano Castaic 200 Super Free for my pitching/flipping next season.

Pitching and flipping both. The reel I have has the flipping switch and I just can't seem to get it to work to well at all. Either it stops right in front of me or it goes air born like I am looking for fish in the trees. It might be the line who knows I might try a different line.

Forget the switch!!!! Use the thumb. If you notice the better reels (shimano) no longer offer the flippin switch. It was added to reels as a fisherman catcher and it worked for a while. Just use your thumb and you will gain the control your looking for. ;D

I have to agree with that statement, it's how I have learned to control the spool.   I would add though that it is still beneficial to have the switch for one reason.  When pitching and flipping you can miss a hook set if you get bit before you have the chance to engage the reel.  The instant engage when you release your thumb is kind of handy.

Here my set up. St Croix Legend 7'6" ( st croix doesn't make this blank anymore)  25lb Gamma Fluorocarbon and a Quantum tour edition reel 7:1 gear ratio. I know some guys perfer reels that have power but I am looking for speed. I like the gamma line for flipping but nothing else. $30 a spool is scary!!!!The rod is fairly light so I can pitch pretty effectively with it also. The reel is great and has unbelievable spool control..no flipping switch..

I use a 7' G.Loomis IMX rod paired with a Shimano Castaic SF, spooled with either 20# P-Line flourocarbon or 17# P-Line Cx Premium mono. I have not used braid for flipping or pitching although I may try that next year.

I have never used the flipping switch even on reels that I have used in the past that had them. I did much better not using it.

I use a 7' Heavy action rod with a quatium accurast reel. The heavy action has a strong back bone which is essitial for setting the hook, the reel is 6.2:1 ratio and has enough speed to pick up the slack and set the hook.

I have used 20 and 30lb fireline but i think SEAGUAR makes the best flourocarbon line. I also pick my line on the water clearity and structure.
