Title: Tach no longer working....
Post by: Waterfoul on July 10, 2012, 02:04:42 PM
1997 Merc 150 EFI.  Tach simply quit working.  Simple fix would be a new tach... but if it's not the gauge, where does it get the signal from?  The stator?  If so... anyone know what color the wires are?  Is there a way to check the output?

You could have some broken magnets under your flywheel. If your tack is inoperative then chances are your starting/accessory battery is not charging either.  Also your voltage regulator could have failed. Regulator is a good place to start if that grey wire isn't grounding out because it's exposed. From the regulator I would the look at the stator and then the flywheel. Good luck.

What is your battery voltage while the engine is running?  Is it charging from the motor?
