I wasn't able to score a partner for the early hours, so I got out on the water a little later than planned. I think I was on the water by about 8:30. Man was it windy. So much so, that I decided to hang out in a protected bay and fish for Largemouth for a little while. I found a very interesting pattern. The fish were definitely in a "following" mood. I noticed that nearly every fish I caught had a follower. So I paid attention to what I was doing and here's what I found. I would cast right at the seawall and fish the bait back very slowly and I'd get bit most of the time. But the bites were all about 20' off of the seawall. So I started just casting 20' out from the seawall and couldn't get bit. Apparently the fish were actually up against the wall and following the bait before taking it. So I started casting right against the wall and retrieving slowly and started catching fish again. All in all I ended up with just shy of 30 largemouth in that area. I had many in the 3lb range.
I felt pretty happy with that since it was windy, but then my friend called me and told me he was on some fish. So I decided to head up his way and join him in the area he was fishing. He was sure right. The area was loaded with Smallmouth. My best was about 4lbs with several 3s and lots of 2s. I think we were averaging around 4 or 5 decent Smallies per drift in this area. It was too windy to fish spots, so using a driftsock was the best we could do. All in all, I think I caught another 15 or so in that area, not counting about a dozen pesky Rock Bass.
Considering the conditions today, it was a great few hours spent on the water. After a bit the wind decided to start dying down a little and it got easier to fish. I'm glad I decided to go.
It's okay Rev if you tell them it was me that called you. It was fun catching all those smallies. I was back out there on Wednesday which was yesterday and they were still there. I fished further south and had a great day no matter where I pulled up at. It was like pick a spot and bam.......FISH ON!!! What a great day!! I love that lake!!!
By the way Rev, check out my Facebook wall. I posted about 25 or so pics of my trips out there May 25, May 30, and May 31. Today was a bit slow but I was still catching them pretty good.
BD. ;D
Good job guys! I saw some of the pics that you posted on the S.W.A.G facebook page Bill. You were on some nice fish for sure!
