This time around St Clair had its ups and downs but overall turned out to be another stellar trip. I went this year with Jason Fowler and our buddy Mike Henderson. Jason has fished Clair before but never experienced it in the spring and Mike has never been there or any good smallie water so this was all new to him. I told them its going to most likely be the best fishing they have ever seen so brace yourself for some unbelievable action. I was getting there hopes really high but felt confident St Clair would live up to the hype. I thought everything was lined up for a big fish bite with the warmer forecast and the super full moon in effect fri-sun.
Every day was different, we had to move alot to find fish each day and rarely caught quality or numbers in the same area twice. On top of that we found that different baits worked better each day. Thursday traps and tubes produced 70 with two 5s and a half dozen 4s but we got blown off the lake midday. Friday was a day we all dream about we put atleast 150 in the boat maybe more way to much action to keep track. Our starting spot and a spot we found midday it just got so ridiculous, we had 27 pounds in the first 30 min and upgraded in the area we found later to 28 1/2 or 29 pounds . It was every other cast 4-6 1/2 pound smallies until the school moved. We knew what these prespawners were eating and were dialed in, jerkbaits and traps dominated the day. At one point I missed 15 min of the action weighing, netting, and taking pics of nonstop 4-6 pounders my buddies were hauling in. It got so stupid we said screw it and stopped taking pics or weighing them.
Well it cant get any better than that and it didn't, Sat was the complete opposite think we boated 50 and nothing bigger than 4s, LOL 50 smallies a bad day. Sunday started out slow only picking up 30 or so by noon again nothing bigger than 4s to that point so we decided to do some exploring but that didn't pan out so we went back to a popular spawning area. By this time surface temps were around 62 degrees with no wind. Earlier all we were catching was 2 1/2-4lb males and most of the boats left. We were still getting bit but they would thump it and instantly spit it out and the ones we happened to hook had it in there bottom jaw. As soon as a breeze kicked up it was on again we started catching fat 5lb females that we assume just moved in. We had to take off and left them chomping but a good way to end the trip. Here are some of the fish we caught when we were still in the picture taking mood LOL.
Biggest of the trip at 6-6
