Title: Grrrr DNR
Post by: Firefighter Jeff on March 21, 2012, 10:37:22 PM
Ok, I have tried but no luck. Does anyone have a link I can go to in order to purchase a pass for the state parks???  If I understand correctly you guys in Michigan can get a $10.00 recreation pass when you renew your licenses??  I think I need to buy a out-of-state annual pass.  Think it costs $29.00.
The wife and I went to the Ludington State Park this past weekend and of course the office was only open during the week. And I couldn't find any information on how to obtain one. They sure don't make it easy. I even tried the DNR site and couldn't find any info.
Last year I wanted to buy one at Harley during the DK Spring Open like I did the previous year.  But no one was at the gate.  I know the weather wasn't great but it was a weekend in May. Seems they want to eliminate all the workers possible.  Seems like they will lose out on some much needed money.
Sorry about the rant.  I just want to pay for my use.  Trust me , it could have been worse.  lol

Last year I went to a state park in September or so and the worker didn't know what to do. I ended up having to buy a day pass. Eventually I found an office that was open and bought an annual pass and I think that it was around $29. I'm a resident now, but it is still a bit of a hassle since I've purchased two vehicles recently and the dealers couldn't add the "P" to the registration. I had to go back to the office and buy a tiny window sticker, but it was only $10.

I thought this post was about a new state DNR somewhere and you had developed a stutter! Anyway, you used to be able to buy stickers at other businesses like Meijers. I think that has all gone away. I believe you can only buy park stickers at the state parks. Not sure you can even buy a park stick at a regular MDNR boat ramp? Not aware of that anyway.

They'll probably come up with a self purchase option one of these days. Their question and answer page about the program is 'down for repairs' at the moment - http://www.michigan.gov/dnr/0,1607,7-153-10365_55798_58027---,00.html

"The Recreation Passport questions and answers are currently under revision. Please check back in early April or call 517-241-7275 for assistance."

Try that phone number.

It's pretty bad when you have to jump through hoops to give them money... I have been having issues all week trying to straighten some issues out with the Ontario DNR....but that is another post.. >:(

Uhhhh yeah sure Mike !!  For some reason I'm leary of your helpfulness !!!

Couple season's ago I fished Crocker during the week, first part of May.  Understood they prolly wouldn't be manning the shack. At the spring open I purchased the pass at Harley.  Last year, same thing, except there was no one at Harley during the open. If I recall they don't have any information posted at the launches on how to purchase the out of state passes.  And like I said I had trouble finding anything on their website.
I'll check out that number Dan.  Thanks  :)

Why don't you email the Michigan DNR and ask them??  Seems to be the most logical way to do it however I can offer you this Jeff.  I live about a mile or so from a DNR office.  I can stop there and ask them if you like.  I can pass by there on the way home however let me know if you would like me to do that and I will make it a point to take that route home rather than one of the other ways I could go.  I have about 4 different ways I can go to and from work and none of them are any more in mileage than the other.  It comes down to time and time of day that any of these routes is better than the other.

Last year aS the first year for our "Recreation Passport". They started that program in October of 2010, I believe. They had many state park areas unstaffed, at least it was that way for much of the year here on the west side. They pretty much left the parks open to anyone because not everyone had the chance to buy the passport if their birthday was before October. As for right now, I don't know why they wouldn't have anyone around, except for it only being March. Good luck Jeff. I have a state park office real close to me as well. I could find out for you.

Thanks UAW and Mike.  I was just thinking maybe a computer wiz on here might have a link.  Like I said I checked the website.  When I get a little time I'll either call or email.  Thanks for the offers guys.  It's really appreciated.  :)  Let me see what I come up with.

I tried buying one today - I couldn't purchase the passport for Michigan residents. I could buy the out-of-state version for $29.
Anyone have any success buying one on-line?

I haven't tried their store at all. I just get the resident one added to my license plate registration. t-bone, did you get your Passport last year?

If so, it should be good until your next license registration this year. Otherwise, I don't know what you can do. If there's a complicating reason, I would call that phone number and ask how to resolve it.
