Yes I was looking, still am, but ill be good until next summerish. My grandpa gave me his 16ft smokercraft pro tiller with 50hp 4-stroke Yamaha!!! Not a bass boat, but I'm really happy I got something to get me on the water. I've fished a few tournaments on it, and it gets the job done!

After puttering around with a trolling motor, that would be a pretty sizable upgrade for me.  Congrats!

I spent years fishing out of a leaky (finally sank completely at Wixom Lake - that was a fun day!!) 14 foot homemade bass boat (and I am not the guy who can do these things right - hence the sinking of the bassman) with a 20HP motor. I fished everywhere in that boat. I went out in waves that would make a billygoat puke in that boat (NOTE: KIDS, AND BIG 'KIDS' DO NOT COPY MY BAD EXAMPLE!!)

In my original bass club, we had a guy dominate the club for several years fishing out of a 10-12 foot flat bottom boat with a 4HP motor. He taught me a lot about fishing verses running around casting!

Your boat sounds pretty good! You can fish just about anywhere even the biggest water if you pick your boat ramp carefully and don't get too much wide open big water between you and a protected area! Great boat for Lake Ovid down to the very small waters that don't get fished as much too!

Actually, it's a ways away for a Hoosier - a good 3 hours - but a fun little lake for anyone who like fishing shallower bass around weeds and wood. Get yourself on I-69 N and keep driving until you get to US-127 N in Lansing.

Take US-127 N about 8 miles North to exit 91 - Price Road.

Turn Right on Price Rd. Drive about 5.5 miles.

After you cross Shepardsville Rd (Stop sign for Price Rd), take the 1st Left into Sleepy Hollow State Park directly back to a very nice boat ramp.

Cast a frog.

Post by: djkimmel on July 15, 2012, 04:31:12 PM
The online maps have not been updated yet to show the boat ramp only new entrance off of Price Rd. The main entrance to the State Park and campground no longer goes all the way around the lake and the old night entrance off of Shepardsville Rd is also closed.

The lake level is almost a foot low. It could use a couple of good rains. The weeds are healthier than I've seen them in quite a while. Still pretty green, with good growth to the surface and a very defined weed line.

The frog bite hasn't been as good as the past couple of years, but a couple of good rains could change that. There is a pretty good deep bite, though, with a few heavyweights being caught.
Title: Re: 2012 frogs only thing
Post by: djkimmel on July 15, 2012, 07:29:20 PM
I like the lake when it has deeper, defined weedlines. But that isn't as good for froggin.' We had a lot of rain yesterday afternoon and last night. If it made it 20 miles North the frog bite might pick up good.

Oh that reminds me...  Is there going to be some sort of pairing thing here for boater/non-boater?

for last years rules see the above thread, start on page 3-4 for what a frog is, and around page 8 we picked teams and ended up with $15 each plus $5 for big fish (5.04lb last year ;D). so lets start getting a count of boaters vs non-boaters and get the frog hopping. insert frog joke, pun here.
;D
mojo, will you be the money man this year?
we will need weigh-in scales too.

no rain, no rain, no rain

Correct me if I'm mistaken, but didn't we pick our own partners last year? That is, except where a boater wanted to fish, but had no partner or vise versa.

Oh, and DK, the rain never made it this far. I hear that it's possible that we might see some Wednesday. Fingers crossed.

Mojo... did you buy a boat? I know you've been talking about it for a while. Oh, you might use Franks.

I now also don't have a truck. Late the evening before I was to leave for a surprise camera boat job, my brake fluid decide to squirt out the back somewhere up in the frame over the back axle near the shock. Didn't have chance before desperately seeking an alternative to figure out what blew or broke!

Trying to stop a 1-ton dually without power brakes and no bass boat is already more excitement than I can handle. I have the occasional nightmare about that as it is!

Luckily, my brotha Genie made a shrewd trade of my 09 Pontiac Vibe for his Chevy Truck and big ole Skeeter bass boat so I could still make the 3-day gig, albeit without not a single minute of sleep the first night... going to bed in a few minutes for about 10-11 hours now that I'm back home.

My understanding is you can choose your own partner, or if you don't have one, bob o, Mojo, whomever will help you get paired up with someone else who doesn't have one. Or you can just ask someone.

I think that means you DO have a boat ? confirm ? If so we could try to get more coanglers, OR I could come up and drag your boat and leave Franks boat. Lemme know. I would rather not borrow, however, IT is last years champion boat !!!!!

My boat is still in 'rehab.' I traded Genie's truck and boat back for my 09 Vibe since it gets way better gas mileage when I don't have a boat to haul! I might already have a boater partner but he has not confirmed yet. I forgot we had talked about fishing this quite some time ago but he hadn't got permission yet. I will check again and try to get a decision from him, then let you know.

I might have a partner. A 'new' guy. He has kids so I'm waiting for him to confirm his taking kids places schedule before I know for sure.

Me not making it last year had nothing to with the weather. I wish it was just that. I'm not that kind of wimp though I don't miss that part of tournaments - making the run no matter what even if every fiber in my being was screaming 'ARE YOU INSANE?!? STAY ON SHORE!!!'

I have always (mostly) drawn the line with lightning though.

It will change a bit between now and Saturday. Not too bad a forecast right now. Might feel pretty good to not fish in 90 degree heat I'm thinking. Might keep the bass up high in the water column and active too if it is cloudy and cooler following a surface water temp cooling stretch of showers.

Would a Strike King Rage Tail Shad be considered a 'legal' frog bait? Someone is asking me. Though they call it a 'shad' it is a topwater bait with a flapping tail.

http://www.basspro.com//Strike-King-Rage-Tail-Shad-Softbait-Lures/product/96632/57075

I haven't told the person yet that I have ran non-scientific personal trials several times of the RT Shad against Horny Toads and other 'quieter' topwaters on Ovid in the past and the quieter baits consistently got more strikes during different times of the day and different times of the year. I probably need to run more trials, but the difference was usually pretty dramatic. Thought I would ask anyway.

Basspro.com includes it if you search topwater frog but they also include Spooks, Boy Howdy, Jitterbuys, Pop 'r, Torpedo, soft topwater spook-type baits like the Money Hound (I have to add these to future trials. I have some old fish sticks - that are pretty much the same thing - that I have had a few really fun days with though they do not look like a frog). I remember last year we determined that mouse and rat-type topwaters did not qualify, correct?

It is starting to look to me like that perfect frog day. I just have to make sure my partner for the day is ready with the proper, high efficiency froggin' equipment! I might have to add my froggin' secret weapon to his boat. Not sure if he is ready for that. He is Mr. Clean with his stuff and my secret weapon usually leaves the boat looking like it has become a part of the swamp!?!

I think we actually covered it last year. The Rage Shad = "Not Legal", the Rage Tail Toad = "Legal". The rules (as they were defined last year) were very specific.

Okay. I have looked at that thread numerous times but can't remember all details. I ran through it again twice today but probably skimmed too fast and missed the reference. Told him I didn't think it was a 'legal' lure. I told him it usually doesn't work well on Ovid either for some strange reason though buzzbaits sometimes work real well? He bought a few more regular frogs.

I would go with frog shaped based on previous discussion on this thread and last year's thread. If in doubt, ask 'tournament director' bob o.

From what I recall.  it was  $20 a man, $5 was big bass,  Not too expensive but you could win your gas money back.  I also think it was more geared towards frog shaped.  I think that big frog head lure with a buzz on the back counted, however you could not put a frog trailer on a spinnerbait or buzz bait.  Though, as always, I'm probably wrong.

The online maps have not been updated yet to show the boat ramp only new entrance off of Price Rd. The main entrance to the State Park and campground no longer goes all the way around the lake and the old night entrance off of Shepardsville Rd is also closed.

I'll be driving in the early morning and thus in the dark.  Are these directions accurate to the ramp? I can get in with the recreation pass too?

Google maps shows a launch north of price rd on shepardsville...

Actually, if you are coming from Ypsi (assuming, based on screen name), The fastest route will be to take I-94W to US-127N (exit 138), US-127N (about 50 miles) to Price Rd (exit 91), Price Rd east and follow directions that you have from there. Recreation Passport will absolutely get you in.

Google maps shows a launch north of price rd on shepardsville...

The launch access off of Shepardsville Rd was closed after the new ramp drive opened. All that 'entrance' ever was was night access after the park closed. It was often locked when I tried to use it early or late anyway, and not a nice place to try to turn around with a boat trailer at all! The old way was really in the main entrance further down Price Rd and then a long, leisurely drive at 25 mph around the entire lake to the ramp.

Like I said, the new entrance is not on the online maps yet but it is WAY easier than it used to be! Way shorter! Just past Shepardsville Rd ON Price Rd. Very quick into the ramp. The old road around the North end of the lake has been closed somewhere past the beach.

The MDNR got this one right and created a nice, improved ramp access and parking for Lake Ovid. Tim, the park manager, probably gets most of the credit. If you are staying for the campground cookout / story-telling afterwards, you'll have to exit the ramp back onto Price Rd to the left and go back in the main entrance a little further down the road to get into the campground on the other side of the lake.

P.S. I would not lead any of you astray. ...well, I would not lead most of you astray! ;D

P.P.S. WATCH OUT FOR DEER! There's about a 'million' of them North of Lansing and along Price Rd and even going into the park through either entrance. Pretty common to have them get in the way. Later in the day it could be pedestrians, horses and bike riders too. They're pretty strict about the speed limit there for good reason.

Yes. Thanks for the food bob o! And for the follow up Mojo.

Question - shouldn't 'Rain' be somewhere in the title of the event?

I thought VinceR and Jay-MadWags were going to win but after hearing they caught 30+ fish in practice, I think they burned their 'hot spot!' ;D

We didn't practice or even fish Lake Ovid since last year so 'our fish' were fresh!! ;D

Actually, I missed a big fish last year out of a hole in the weeds on a little hump and Derek caught our big fish from the same exact hole Saturday (I didn't want to try again in case I missed again)! After he missed the bass the first time. We approached the spot from a different angle and got the bass the 2nd time.

We came back a while later and he missed a bigger bass from the same exact little hole in the weeds again!! I'm going to have to find out what is in that little hole! And figure out how to trick the bigger bass that live in it better.

I was lucky to catch 1 of Vince and Jay's bass right after they left the area with about 30 minutes to go. Thanks guys!! ;D As soon as I started reeling the frog fast late in the tournament day, I got 4 strikes including the first 2 casts I sped up. Just had trouble hooking them. The 2 of us missed 1 nice keeper 3 times. Maybe our reactions were slowed down by wet clothes? There sure were a bunch of frog lines all over the weeds! :D

I did catch a dink on my first cast of the morning and my keeper on the Bass Frog Clone. First time I've had the chance to try them. I had several other strikes on it. The bass seem to like them.

Must be the brown one you were fishing because they didn't like the green one at all.  Green legs, yellow legs, didn't matter.  Nice win though Dan.
Title: Re: 2012 frogs only thing
Post by: djkimmel on August 13, 2012, 04:21:10 PM
Thanks. It was the brown one but it has the same white belly the bass see in the green one. I thought about starting with the Yellow Dart but yellow is another color like red for bass - they either cream it or run from it! I don't think yellow is as good as often as red but I was interested in it for the shock value that sometimes gets 'trained' bass to bite. That might be poor thinking since some research shows yellow/chartreuse actually appears as a brighter white to bass. So, maybe I should have tried it?

With the extreme weather change I figured I was better off starting with a 'safe' white belly. I caught a small bass almost immediately and stuck with it. It did have the brown legs. Not sure if the bass cared or not. I had a couple strikes and landed a small bass on a brownish Horny Toad too though?

I usually prefer green over brown so I made myself do something different by tying on the brown instead. It was a not-quite subconscious attempt to boost my confidence a little in preparation for a cold, wet day. I have often felt angler confidence does more than color choice.

I really wish I had thought of speeding up the retrieve a lot earlier once things slowed down and we got around the areas that already had frog tracks crisscrossing every which way! I used to think of that stuff without really thinking of it. I'm rusty (plus cold and wet during the event).

Vince helped by mentioning how he had slowed waaaayyy down when we fishing nearby. Reminded me that I had though several times during the day that I should try high speed as a contradiction to what most anglers would think the weather conditions called for. Besides, slowing down is really Derek's job, not mine! ;D
