Title: invasive species you all may not know about is the biggest threat.
Post by: Anthony Adams on October 03, 2011, 09:59:02 AM
It's not the Asian Carp, It's not the VHS virus or the Zebra Mussel.

It's the Quagga Mussel.

I first heard about the big impacts of the Mussel about 5 years ago and I heard it meantioned recently by a few Biologists who felt this was our biggest threat to the great lakes by far.

I think you all maybe shocked at just how big of an impact this mussels has on our fisheries.

Please take the time to read and learn more about this concern.

Voracious invasive quagga mussels are gobbling Great Lakes' food chain is what the following arcticle is about.

There are almost no Zebra mussels left in the St. Clair River. The Quagga mussel has out-competed them.

On nearly all of the great lakes the quaggas have outcompeted the zebras, not only are they larger but the can also survive greater depths. I remember seeing a map, a few years ago, of lake michigan with the range that zeebs are found in the lake, along with the range of the quaggas and the quaggas range overlapped that of the zebra mussel nearly twofold.

It's never going to end.  Once they learn to control one species, it will be time for another to invade.  It's a vicious circle, we just have to fight it.  To think, some areas out west consider smallmouth an invasive species!!
