Great Lakes Bass Fishing Forum

Got out yesterday up in the channels.  We had a fun morning.  We caught lots, but the bass weren't big.  Good news first.  Bait is everywhere in the channel system right now.  However, up near Fawn the previous Friday this wasn't so much the case.  We fished all morning up there Friday and did not have a productive day.  We went up toward Stag and didn't do much better.  Ok, back to yesterday. (Monday)

For a little fun we started out targeting a few largemouth before heading down the system for smallies.  We found a nice little stretch of docks in the North Channel that was loaded with largemouth.  We casted Senkos up past the weedbeds that were out in front of the docks and got bit every other cast.  That was fun but the bass were small.  So we moved South.

We headed down the South Channel stopping at a few community spots like San Souci.  That's a weird spot.  When the bass are there, it's all good.  But when they're not, it's snag central.  After breaking off 4 times without a bass, we bugged out and headed South.  We wanted to fish a little stretch that's been really good as of late, but another boat was on it.  We were disappointed, but we decided to head about a half mile North and started there.  Before making this short run, I watched the guy fishing the stretch I wanted.  He wasn't catching anything but I noticed he was fishing like a largemouth area.  He was casting at the seawall from 20 feet out, reeling in pretty quickly and repeating the process.  I thought to myself "this guy isn't fishing it right".  Anyway, we ran over to another set of walls and not even 5 minutes later we see the other guy go flying by, giving up.  So we moved in.

We tied on very heavy stuff and got as close to the seawalls as we could, casted out 25 to 30 feet and got our bait to the bottom as quickly as possible.  Then we did a vertical drift not even 5 feet from the seawall.  Yep, there were LOTS of fish there.  They weren't giants yesterday, but they were abundant.  Every cast on every drift yielded a bite.  It wasn't much of a mixed bag.  They were all about 1.75 to 2lbs.  It was definitely a class size school kind of a deal.  But a ton of bait was in the area.  I mean thousands and thousands. 

My good friend lit up with excitement as we started catching bass with good consistency.  It took him a while to get the hang of this odd style of fishing, but once he started getting his lure to the bottom, he started landing bass.  In fact, he got the biggest, near 3lbs.  That was really the only good fish we got, but we got lots.   ;D

I didn't get a chance to fish a stretch up in Algonac that has also been producing, but I'm sure it still is.  The bait's been there too.  Hopefully I can get a little bit figured out up at Fawn/Stag.  I have some good Canadian water up there, but my partner yesterday doesn't have an Ontario license and on Friday we opted for some other areas that didn't end up producing.  I'm sure there are fish up there, but I'm guessing you have to find some pretty specific stuff right now to get 'em good.  I hope to provide a better report about that area soon.  If anyone wants to get out and fish Fawn soon, let me know.  I'm always up for it.
