Had a fun day today. Got out with a friend who hasn't fished St. Clair in years and the lake didn't let us down. We got out to a beautiful sunrise through the clouds and glass calm water. We high tailed it out to the deep stuff I found a few fish on last week near the ship channel and got a few on deep cranks. But the action was slow, so we headed up the channels and managed a few in the lower part of the South Channel in about 12 FOW around rocks. Still nothing to write home about. So we headed out to the end of the Middle Channel and caught a bunch of Rockies and a non-keeper Smallie. My friend had fun catching a dozen or so Rockies, but I wanted some Smallies, so we headed back toward Metro Beach and found a good pack of fish. Most of what we got were carbon copy 2.5lb smallies with a couple of nice largemouth mixed in. We got a couple of smallies pushing 3lbs which wasn't too bad considering we were mostly just fun fishing and not trying all that hard. My buddy was thrilled with the day.
We caught them on a variety of things, cranks, dropshots, and tubes. This week I'll be out with a couple of more experienced guys, so our plan is to go looking for some bigger fish. This'll be the week we start looking at the channels and seeing if the fish are showing up there yet. I'm looking forward to it because I've seen evidence in the lower South Channel already of fish moving up. I love river fishing because it's a whole different technique. I can't wait for things to heat up in the channels. This week will be a test run. I'll let ya know how it goes.
Tom you and I are going to have to fish the North Channel again. I need another new rod. :)
LOL, that was one of the cooler things I've seen. Although I can't promise that kind of luck all the time. ;)
