Anyone know what the deal is with all the dead carp on Kent? Saw hundreds out there this morning. It's going to stink in a couple of days!!

I've heard it was a weed kill that killed them
But I've never seen this kind of carp kill on other lakes after a weed kill
Saw no dead pan fish, pike or bass. Just hundreds of big carp
I was there yesterday and the carp kill was was from Dawson Rd into the lake under 96. Only saw carp , nothing else.
That lake has always been loaded with carp. It probably won't hurt the lake much. Maybe the bass fishing will get better now.........not that it has ever been bad.

I was out Friday night and saw over 50 in the stretch of shore I was fishing, and at least as many in all the other spots I checked on my way out. I've never seen a fish kill of all just one species like that. Post-spawn stress was my first thought, but yes, it does take a lot to kill a carp.
When I was told weed kill
I thought maybe they used pellets. And the carp ate the pellets
But I agree with BD, It can't hurt the Bass fishing at all
A week ago I saw a handful of dead carp on the lake but they were spread out so I didn't think much of it. We came into one cove and noticed a smell and then saw a bloated carp up under some trees. That one fish was bad enough, I can't imagine hundreds.
Rotting carp, besides being a great name for a band, is not a pretty smell...
There's probably plenty of carp left but if it was only carp that died it should reduce the biomass load per acre which can be better for the other fish.
Channel 7 in Detroit is going to do a piece on it in a few minutes. Guess i'll have to stay up and find out what is going on.
DNR says it could be from spawning stress, rising water temps "or something else"...an investigation is now under way.

"Something else" sounds like what they said about the Hot Pond fish kill. The most I heard them say about that was water temp changes did it, but I didn't know that water temps killed ducks too. Plus, from what I have heard most of the carp have been done with spawning for couple of weeks. Maybe not out there, but why would that kill so many this year? Someday I hope they stop poisoning the lakes.
Sundays huron valley bass tournament was absolutly awful to fish becuase of the stink from the hundreds of dead carp.
even the ones we saw still swimming had large white spots on them. there will plenty still thrashing around in the weeds and in the shoreline trees.
maybe its mother natures way of managing the population. lord knows there are plenty of carp in that lake.
there was a catch and release carp tournament out there last saturday and the guy i know who fished it said there were very few caught.

Carp is an invasive species so I wonder that the MDNR will put too much effort into them. Could be some type of 'natural correction?'

Hum,
I've all ways heard the DNR planted Carp in the early 60's as the next big game fish.
But invasive or not
There's been more then a few big fish kills
1.) The hot pond
2.) Walleye on Erie this spring
3.) Now Carp at Kent
And just don't believe it's mother nature (stress)
Part of the issue is that fish kills are getting more coverage more often from the media because it fits into commons themes that they believe people can digest and are interested in.
The common carp has been here a lot longer than the 1960's. They were introduced in the late 1800's apparently as an attempt to create a fish farm food source and other uses. Back then many things were being introduced with zero thoughts about adaptation and consequences.
Carp are consummate adapters.
The 1960's is when the MDNR introduced salmon into the Great Lakes.
I just took a drive through Kensington on my way home from dinner. There are dead carp everywhere from north of Buno all the way down to the west launch. The smell of decay nearly made my wife sick. Coincidentally, all the weeds in the lake are also dead. It seems like the majority of people (or the ones in charge of the lake) would be happy if there were no fish and no weeds in the lake with the amount of chemicals they dump in there.
That's a common problem in many swimming pools (i.e. lakes).
I read a couple articles and the DNR is pretty sure its a carp virus called Spring Viremia of Carp. Apparently its been found in the Huron river up to to the dam in Milford.
kinda curious if its gonna spread to portage chain. Only time will tell i guess.

hmmm, so is this a good thing or a bad thing, as far as bass/bass fishing are concerned, maybe chicago needs a few of these fish to spread around
Possibly just the power of suggestion. I drove by Kent today on 96, and could have swore I could smell rotting carp.
do you guys think such a large amount of dead fish could actually hurt the water conditions? A significant increase in bacteria?
Hopefully the amount of water in lakes like Kent is large enough to avoid that. Just wondering what everyone thought?

Was going to head to Kent on Saturday....sure glad I checked this site earlier in the week and saw this :D
Carp are hard to kill. Yep, caught one at a river in town when I was in high school. It ran about 20 lbs and I wanted a picture of it. Threw it in the trunk of my car. Drove it home, photographed and threw it back in the trunk. Took it to the river and it swam away !!! lololol :D
That's one reason why they're everywhere!!
Anybody been to kent lately? Has the stink left the lake and how's the fishing?
Given that the next KLBA is tomorrow, I'm very interested in the answer to that question.
