Title: Looking For Ice Out Lakes
Post by: Skulley on March 26, 2013, 08:57:40 PM
Today I decided to drive to and from work past some of the lakes to fish in Oakland County not far from my home to see if there were any that were thawed as of yet. So far......none. The following lakes still had plenty of ice on them: Oakland, Pontiac, Lotus/Maceday, Union, Long, and Orchard. I drove by all these lakes in the last two days. In order for the thawing process to accelerate, we are going to have several nights in a row above freezing. A few warm rainfalls will make ice out happen quicker yet. C'mon Spring. How about your area?? Any lakes thawed yet?? I'm hearing of people planning some walleye trips to St. Clair and the Detroit River this upcoming weekend. Anyone else??? How about Belleville or Ford Lake?? Are those lakes thawed yet??

Still frozen over in the saginaw area. Was out around the saginaw bay today and it still has a good amount of ice on it, even saw a couple ice fishermen. River is pretty open but none of the lakes

I just heard this morning that Kent still had plenty of ice on it and that it also is still 3 feet down. Usually they don't bring Kent up to normal pool until it is totally thawed.

You're right.  If they don't start pretty soon it may not be ready for opening day.

Well all my questions were answered by you guys about those lakes too. Was headed to Kent but UAW Big Dog answered that one. I need to go get my rig out of storage and start tinkering with it. Put batteries in it, rig up new led lights and pray for warm weather.

Just drove by Long lake in white lake twp.  Looks like all of the ice is gone.  At least at the launch end of the lake.  Union is frozen solid.  Open water is a pretty sight.

Belleville does freeze however it usually one of the first lakes that gets ice out. Orchard still had plenty of ice on it when I went by it yesterday afternoon.

Ford no longer has any ice on it.  If you're headed that way, PM me.  I live less than 5 minutes from the launch.

Do you do very good on Ford? Did it freeze enough to fish on this winter?

I do okay there. Good Smallie population. I do okay on the largemouths there too. I've always done better on deep weed lines.

When driving home from work today I decided to go by Orchard Lake. It was pretty much thawed out. The lagoon where the launch is was thawed however the entrance to the lake from the lagoon was blocked by a big sheet of ice that ran up the shoreline for a way. That should be thawed in a day or two. Won't be long now.

Drove past Kent yesterday and the lake is open but the water is still way down. Hopefully they'll start filling it up pretty soon.

They keep Kent low during the winter and then raise the water levels in the Spring. But we do need some more rain.

Lots of ice on the lakes  in the Graying area. Saturday  90% of the lakes we past were ice covered. By Sunday morning they  were starting to lose some of the ice around the shore line. Just  last week  you could still snowmobile on the lakes. When the rain come Sunday a lot of ice disappeared.
