Title: robbed again
Post by: McCarter on May 07, 2009, 04:04:04 AM
just got home from makin baits and noticed the cover on my boat was undone and lifted on one side.  didnt think too much of it until i opened my garage and noticed my tackle boxes werent in there.  i cut the grass the minute i got home from fishing tuesday and then got the grill going for dinner.  i forgot to take my tackle out of the boat.  of course, everything is gone.  i literally have nothing left.  finally get a boat and now i have no tackle to fish with.  hope the thieves are young kids and there parents find my stuff sitting around in there garage and put 2 and 2 together and return my stuff.  im putting a sign in my front yard that is going to say bought this house 2 years ago and have been robbed twice.  is this wixom or detroit?   why cant they be here when i roll up?

Post up what they took, any rods/reels with wraps or other distinguishing  marks, boxes with labels. Anything that would identify them as yours.
If they don't pawn your stuff more than likely they'll try to sell it to one of us, be it on craigslist or at a launch somewhere. The more people looking for it the better. I also have too much tackle (don't tell my wife) I'm sure I can contibute.

Brian - that does suck...

I have way too much tackle too... you can go through all of my extras and pick out some stuff. I'll trade for a guided tour of Kent ;-)

I'm serious about this offer - hate to have this happen to a good guy. I'm nearby and can swing by or we can hit a local lake. I'll be around this weekend and was hoping to get out often.

That really sucks.  Do like was mentioned above; put up a list of what was taken so we can all watch for it.  Probably a long shot, but why not?

I'll go rummage through the shop, I'm sure there's some stuff I can part with.

Since they got you twice, I bet it is someone that lives close to you.  What a low life to steal tackle!  Post what got ripped off.

If you need anything in particular - please ask.  I have a ton of tube heads and drop shot weights if that would help.

I feel for ya man. Last November i got into my truck at 4am to go duck hunting and noticed my coffee cup was laying on its side on the front seat of the truck. I never do that cuz i never finish my coffee and it leaks everywhere. So then i look and notice my GPS mount is still on the window, but no GPS! They grabbed the main unit, jerked the power chord so hard it broke off in the cig lighter (thus knocking down my cup) and ran off. We live in yuppyville USA - in a fairly remote subdivision that is mostly upper-middle class - never thought i would have to worry about locking my car doors... but there ya go.  Funny thing is i had 400$ worth of duck calls sitting on the seat and an mp3 player in the center console.. they just grabbed the GPS and ran. My mom was not happy either - since she spent like 350$ on it as a xmas/bday present the year before.

Thieves suck! I say we burn 'em.

Just got your message from early this morning, hope you called the cops right away. You had quite the collection of Revos and Pointers. That sucks cause you usually leave some stuff over here but it was all in your boat now. I got some stuff to get you by too. Did they take the GPS out of the boat?

Man that really blows, it seems that this problem is getting worse with all the thefts of late. If something like that ever happened to me I am afraid of what I would do. Probably dedicate my life momentarily to hunting them down and taking care of them my way. I hate thieves!!  >:(

I am sure I will bring way too much tackle to Grand lake next week. If you need some things to get by you can have some of my extras. Dont know what color pointers you throw but I have a few duplicates you could get since I know you throw the crap out of them things.

Sorry to hear that Brian, seems that bad things always happen to good people for some reason.  My dad got his Pick Up stolen ON EASTER! It was the neighbor boys behind us, they parked it on a different road every night and then totaled it a week later.  Thank God for insurance! I wish I had enough tackle to just give you. But if we get out you can use whatever you want in my bag.  I guess it's a good thing you own your ow bait company  :P Let me know if you need anything.

Brian - so sorry to hear that, especially as a fellow 2-time victim of the weak moraled low lifes who choose to dehumanize themselves this way.

Can you get any help from insurance at all (I hope)? I'll help too if I can with some donations of fishing gear if that will help you short or long term.

Shameful. Everyone knows the difference between right and wrong.

Title: Re: robbed again
Post by: McCarter on May 07, 2009, 03:13:44 PM
Thanks everyone.  They got my entire collection of jerkbaits which was a 3700 packed to the gills with mostly rogues but also about a dozen LC Pointers, Bomber Long As, Jackall Squad Minnows, and some other miscellaneous brands.  They got my Shimano Jerkbait box that was full of all Pointer 100s.  You know the boxes shimano used to make that were molded to hold lures individually?  Yep, the green bottom jerkbait box.  I dont know how many jerkbaits it held, but every slot was filled.

They also got my swimbait box.  In it I had a Jackall Giron, A Tru Tungsten 4" shad, and a mess on Optimum Baby Line Thru soft swimbaits.

Shallow Crankbaits are all gone.  Mostly Bandits, but also many LC, Bomber, Norman, Manns, Rapala DT, Luhr Jensen Speed Traps, and many others.  ANother box that was packed so tight you could only snap one side of the lid.

Deep Cranks no more.  LC, Rapala DT, Norman, Bandit, Bomber

My flippin box that was packed with Gamakatsu hooks, tungsten weights, beavers, brush hogs, yamamotos hulas, and a ton more creature baits.

My Rat L Trap box again, packed with as many as you could fit in a 3700.  They were lined up vertically rather than on there side so i could fit more in there.  Anyway, Rat L Traps, LC, Yo Zuri, XCalibur, Jackall TN 70s, Cordell, etc.

My Wacky box filled with Nemesis 4 and 5" Sickos, O rings, hooks

Dropshot Box filled with Gobys, weights, hooks.

Jig box with mainly Strike King Jigs but also Chompers FB jigs, Buckeye Mops Jigs, Terminator Jigs, Shakey jig heads, etc.

My jig trailer wallet that weighed about 5 lbs.  All Zoom Super Chunk and Super Chunk Jrs.  Proabably about 40-50 packs worth of Green Pumpkin, Green Pumpkin Purple, Green Pumpkin Blue, Watermelon, Black, Black Blue, PB&J, Castaic Choice ( best color ever and they dont make it anymore.  Found these on Ebay and paid $3.99 a bag for) and a few other colors.

My Big Cabelas Bag packed with Zoom Flukes, Tubes, Creatures, Shakey Worms, 10" worms, rattles, Mega Strike, about 20 packs of Gamakatsu 3/0 EWG hooks, 10 packs of Owner DS hooks, Horny Toads, Finesse Worms, Hula Grubs, etc...

They also took my life vest...Bass Pro Shops XPS.

XTools Pliers

Here is the real kicker.  They took my friggin day box tray.  Its a hunk of plastic that sits on top of the small compartment in front of the Drivers console.  What the hell would they need that for?

Who knows what else.  I had thrown a bunch of stuff in the glove box, too.  A few LC pointers still in box that JJ picked up for me at Gander Mt.  Spro Aruku Shads still in pack.  Zoom Critters.

The stuff i am most upset about, obviously, my jerkbaits and traps.  But also the Optimum BLTs and my TT Shad.  My hooks and tungsten weights.  And my jig trailers.  Talk about a heart break.

Hopefully, insurance will come through.  If not, I hate to do it but i will be accepting all charitable donations.

all my rods were in my garage.  i forgot to mention that.  i guess i will start from the beginning.

My dad and I got off work early Tuesday and went out to Kent Lake.  When I got home that evening, i immediatly took my rods and my dads old school tackle box out and put them in my garage.  Then i cut the grass.  Took about an hour and change.  When i got done with the lawn, i fired up the grilled and cooked dinner.  After thati put the kid in the tub, got her dressed and took her downstairs to play while my wife cleaned up.  My wife came down stairs at about 7:30 pm and i went out to put the cover on the boat.  i didnt even think about my boxes still in the boat.  I have been religiously taking everything out of the boat after each outting.

Fast foward to last night (early this morning).  I got home round 3:15 am and noticed my cover was unbuckled and lifted on the passenger side.  Looked inside and everything looked good, until i got to the glove box.  EMPTY.  So i climed in the boat to check my tackle compartment.  EMPTY.  this morning i did a thorough search and thats when i realized they stole my vest, pliers, day box tray.  What a kick to the grapes.

You guys are a great group of people to be associated with. If only there were more of people such as yourselves, this world would be a better place. I'll replace that shimano box of rouges for ya just for the he__ of it.  Let it be known how and I'll do it. Maybe we can have a donation drop site or something like that. I 've got to much tackle too.

Again, i appreciate all the offers guys.  If insurance comes through for me then i should be all set.  If anything, i would rather see you guys sell your old and extra tackle on ebay or something and then buy some quality Nemesis Baits with the money or donate to charity or something.

I hope you guys dont take this the wrong way, but i wouldnt feel right taking freebies if i can get insurance to cover it.  If they say no, different story.

But i do appreciate everyones support.  Makes me feel all warm and fuzzy inside.

Thanks to all.  I love you guys like step brothers and sisters :D

I will keep you all posted!

I stored my last boat outside, and I got tired of the constant hassle of taking all my stuff out each time I came home.  Just before I upgraded to Lightning our garage was broken into.  Got all my lawn stuff, mower, blower, etc.  Cops figure it was a lawn crew who saw my garage door up just a hair & pried it open.  Decided with the insurance $$ plus some more to build a new garage.  My ride's got a bay all to herself now.

But stuff like this reminds me that my last garage was broken into before.  Gotta admit I've been thinking about locker bars all day... :-\'

Sorry to hear about your misfortune McCarter.   >:(   :'(  Don't people pay attention to the Ten Commandments anymore especially "Thou shalt not steal."  I always lock my compartments of the boat even parked in my locked garage.  Can't trust anyone....that's for darn sure.  I also have a neighbor we call "Nosey Jean".  Thank God for "Nosey Jean" because nothing gets by her.  She called the police when she saw a unscrupulous scumbag go into my neighbors open garage.  The police arrived in time and arrested the scumbag.  Now the neighbor didn't want to press charges until myself and several other neighbors said that he'd better or we will encounter more of the same.  Well he did press charges and the 17 year old scumbag who had a record now is in jail as he broke his probation.  I am currently working on putting surviellance camaras all over my property.  I will have two in my garage in case someone breaks in.  I am not messing around anymore.  My neighbor Jerry put up camaras about a year ago and has caught numerous scumbags around his house and we live in a pretty nice hood although he borders a park and I am backed up to a school.  We also have two dogs.  Never enough security is what I say.  I would go to that pawn shop if I were you or any in your area.  I will check the ones in my neck of the woods to see if any fishing gear has shown up most recently.   I know most of the owners of them in my area.  If I find anything I will be in touch.  I will stop by a couple today on my way home from work that are not to far from my house.

I've been keeping an eye on other local forums and craigslist.
I'm thinking about another alarm on my boat. Last year I got a cheap one and it didn't last. I'm looking at the Viper ones with proximity detection that are designed for convertibles and possibly run it off its own motorcycle AGM battery with 2 way paging. I think I can seal it and make it waterproof. Anybody else use alarms on their boats? Tips?

On the rare occasion my boat is not inside of the locked garage overnight it is not really practical to carry all my stuff inside.

one of my friends used one on his ranger -factory installed- front and back..it took the thief all of  about 30 seconds to rip them out..if he had left the hatchs open his boat would not have been nearly destroyed..think about that.. they stuck a crow bar under the locker bar and honked on it.. locker bars only have about 3/4" play if you bend the arm 1/2" it will come out..

I stopped by the two pawn shops I knew of near my house on the way home from work today.  Nothing.  I will check them periodically.  I talked to both the owners and they told me they had not seen any tackle for quite a while.  They told me they would call me if anything turned up.  One of the owners sons play soccer with my son.  He said he doesn't like to buy stolen merchandise.  Any distinguishing marks on your boxes or rods would help him identify them.  PM McCarter if you can with anything you got that could identify your stuff.  My friend was very helpful.  The other guy I went to high school with and I take him fishing occasionally.  He told me the same.  So anything you can give me to identify your stuff would definitely help.

I agree with Zooker on the locker bars.  My buddy down in Allen Park had them.  Took the thieves maybe 40 seconds to pry them.  He did not lock his compartments, just used the locker bars.  He said he would have been better off just locking the compartments and forgoing the locker bars.  He did get paid off by his insurance company though.

I got a feeling your robbery were locals.  They probably had been watching you take your equipment in and out.  Sometimes doing that draws more attention.  Your better off leaving it in the boat even if it is outside and just simply locking the compartments.  I don't know.......everyone has different insight on this.  I am sure any input would help.

Had the same thing happen to me last year Brian.  Insurance came thru (home owners) very quickly with a check (minus my deductable of course).

My boat will soon be stored indoors under lock and key... but not soon enough.  I need a couple nice days to clean out my garage, move things around, etc... then it will be out of site and locked up.

Some observations

1.  Bunch of great people here on this website offering up extra tackle.

2.  Having some of your stuff stolen sure makes you feel violated.

3.  Holy smokes did you have a LOT of fishing tackle  !!!!!!!!  I'd be interested in hearing the value amount when you have it figured.

In 2001 I had some rod combos and one 3700 box taken out of my boat at a resort on Hamlin Lake.  We figured the culprits came by boat, jumped the dock and took from three boats that night.  I don't spend nearly as much as many do here on rods and reels but it added up to over $900.  My home owners did take care of me though.
Shoot, before that happened, for as long as I could remember (years) we left gear sitting out in our boats, even left the keys in them.  Not anymore  !!!!

Hope everything works out for you McCarter.

things that would identify my tackle would be the shimano jerkbait box.  dont see too many of those around.  i dont even know anyone else that has one.

my crankbait box has a crack in the top left corner with a ziplock bag stuffed in the hole so hooks dont hang out.

2 custom painted rat l trap lures with the initials rt on them and one cheetam painted trap.  the rt are orange craw and sexy shad and the cheetam is log perch.

swimbait box has mainly optimum blt but also has one sebile 95 in perch, one jacall giron bluegill, one tru tungsten 4" shad in bluegill and some basstrix in shad.

other jerkbait box has a lc pointer 100 dd in eggshell.  a ton of rogues and x raps mostly black gold, black chrome, clown, perch, /d log perch.  has a few bigger lc 128 andlc slender pointers, kinami jerkbait, jackall mask 100 and 3 jackalsqaud minnows.

my trailer wallet has all zoom super chunks, reg and jr.  colors are gp, gp purp, gp blue,  black, black blue, pb&j, and castaic choice.

It's very unfortunate that your stuff was stolen and I hate it. But I noticed there were comments about Detroit, people steal where ever you live. I guess that's why we have locks on things where ever we live. You might want to keep your comments about Detroit to yourselves. I did'nt happen in Detroit, It happened in Wixom. ???

I think it was an innocent comment made out of the frustration of having hundreds of dollars stolen... lets not make more out of it then it was... everyone relax, breath deep, count to 10 before you type....
Title: Re: robbed again
Post by: McCarter on May 12, 2009, 10:59:53 AM
I made the comment because Detroit is often the crime capital of Michigan and at times even the Country.  It was not meant to offend anyone from Detroit or anything like that.  Just saying it would be more understandable happening in Detroit rather than a quiet little neighborhood in Wixom.  I know crime happens everywhere.  I am just frustrated.  10 years and thousands of dollars were taken from my property.  The worst part is my wife and I dont exactly feel safe anymore. I am up late every night cuz i am a night person.  I used to be able to just relax and watch tv or make lures but now I am peeking out windows and running out to my garage with a bat everytime i hear any noise.  My home was built in 1983.  There are a lot of creeks and pops going on that i never used to notice, but now everytime i hear anything, i go into combat mode.  i am on edge to say the least, so please dont take any offense to what i said about Detroit.  I didnt mean any offense by it.

It's tough when reacting right after such a violation. I remember how I felt when they broke into my camper right behind the house while I slept... in Lansing. It happens everywhere. Unfortunately.

Let's just continue to support each other and help when possible. That part is great and helps make us all feel better about the world that has a few bad persons who make it harder for the rest of us who just want to live and enjoy life with our families. Tips on how to minimize risk are always welcome no matter where we live.

one of my friends used one on his ranger -factory installed- front and back..it took the thief all of  about 30 seconds to rip them out..if he had left the hatchs open his boat would not have been nearly destroyed..think about that.. they stuck a crow bar under the locker bar and honked on it.. locker bars only have about 3/4" play if you bend the arm 1/2" it will come out..

I would not reccommend the lock r bars....I have heard of thieves taking the winch rope off and using the winch to rip the Loc r bars right out of the cap....I don't even leave my lockers locked while my boat is parked in the garage....I take my rods out, and I would rather have the thief take some tackle then tear up my boat trying to get to it....

When I travel I cover my boat up and hope for the best, my Bass Cat has an Alarm so that makes me feel a little better..I know alot of guys use baby monitors...

Funny you posted about the baby monitors. I have heard about them before amd I bought one today. It is a good idea but the range on the Graco vibe one I got is horrible. It can't get a signal from my garage to my bedroom and it says 2000 feet on the box! I don't see how it would work at a hotel or up north when we leave the boats in the water at the dock.

What about a couple FRS radios?  Put one in the boat with the button taped down?  Might not be practical for every night but might work well when on the road...  just a thought.

I would think a car alarm could be modified to work in a boat.  As long as it can be kept dry in all the right places.  ??

Brian:

I fell for you man.  Really sucks to get violated like that.  I was thinking of getting one of these as a protective measure:

And the price seemed reasonable.  If you try and modify something in your boat permanently, it will not last in the marine environment unfortunately.  At least this is easily taken in /out when you need it.  I did hear you need to put a few beach balls under your cover to raise it up, and put the motion detector on the floor, or the flapping cover in a good rain/wind storm will accidentally trip.  Good luck with the insurance Bro, and let us know how it works out.

BTW, I have a few of the shimano boxes as well - love em.
