Title: absolutely the worst show, Fishing University
Post by: capt charlie's charters on January 15, 2014, 02:25:34 PM
okay so I gave up watching Charlie ingram long ago, but the latest episode  Indian River, Mullet Lake, figured it might be worth a view....NOT.   Was more an infomercial for Honda and Freedom baits, HORRIBLE back ground music and all of 8 minutes worth of pathetic fishing.  phew, now I feel better, but how do these shows stay on the air ????

fishing shows are not like they used to be anymore. they all seem to be hour long infomercials.
i refeuse to pay for the outdoor package that brighthouse sells so i guess i'm S.O.L. as far as fishing shows go anymore. oh well lots of work to do around the house anyway.

I haven't seen his show in a long time. But it sounds like you did not enjoy the episode? :D

As a pro couch fishermen I don't think there is a show that is not an infomercial.  At least it is something to watch during our long winter months.

That show is a tough one to watch. But I think its just as bad Watching Bill Dance fish stocked ponds.

On the flip side of it. Major League Fishing is the best show on TV. Not to mention this year shows how good Michigans fishing is. To watch Brent Ehrler catch massive smallies left and right and to have Ike only catch 5 total pounds makes for a great show.

Fishing U is nothing more than two fat guys out on the lake jawing about the people who paid for the show.  Can't stand it.  Never seen them catch a decent fish or more than a couple during an entire show.

Much prefer MLF or Bass Pros for sure.  Also like the coverage of the FLW and BASS events.  Another poor show is Lunkerville, avoid it.  Watch something on the Lifetime channel instead.

Usually one of the fat guys owns the company.  he must be doing something right.  I think all he does is hunting and fishing shows plus fishes tournys.  While we sit at work watching it snow.....

Watch Something on the Lifetime Channel instead...no need for such extremes. :D  Anytime I walk in the room and my wife has something from the Lifetime Channel on, I say " Nope, not happening" and then go either in the garage or watch TV in the basement.  I hate that channel.  I do agree with you that MLF and the Bass Pros are two of the better shows out there, but I don't get to see them much since I don't have the channel they are on.  I actually watch most of my fishing stuff through a computer that I have connected to my TV.  Really good shows available on-line, including "Bustin Sticks" the local one on one fishing show that BrandiRawks Production produced.  I don't know what everyone else thinks of that web show, but I thought it was well done and a very cool concept

Who do you mean by 'Big D'? Not me...? I don't think I even knew about the show until you posted your 'review' :)

Burt and Mullett are a lot more popular now. So are most of the bigger lakes up in Northern Michigan. I'm guessing it's the schools of big smallmouth bass...? :D

I haven't seen the MLF episode from Alpena. Sounds like they did pretty good?

I always thought Fishing U was entertaining at best. However, if there is something better on, I watch that instead. It's not up there in my top 5 fishing shows on TV.

Mi outdoors is a good show and always has been. I dont care much for fishing u. The best in my opinion is Zonas Show. That dude is entertaining as hell and he provides some good info as well. Hook n look of course is a solid show, also like Bass pros and this years MLF

I remember Mort and Jerry. I got a picture with  Mr. Chaippetta. at an out door show at the state fair coliseum.  I met Mr. Neff at a buck pole up north  with my grandfather too many years ago.

I really don't remember Mort Neff, Fred Trost is who I remember from when I was younger.  I do however have very clear memories, funny ones at that, whenever I hear the name Mort Neff.  My Grandfather was a big outdoorsman, but was very much an "old school" kind of guy.  He had his way of doing things, and was never one for any new technology or techniques.  He was a very quiet, soft spoken guy, but if he were out fishing and backlashed his reel, tossed a lure in a tree, or had some other issue, it was a different story, especially if someone made a joking comment about what he did.  My grandfathers response was almost always..."who the hell died and made you Mort Neff."  I still smile thinking about that comment to this day, especially whenever I hear the name Mort Neff.

I remember Mort Neff.  I hated it when Jerry C. took over.  Fred Trost wasn't all that great either.  I also remember Curt Gowdy, Phil Harris, and Bing Crosby pheasant hunting on the American Sportsman.

Current shows that I like are Zona, Hook N Look,  Bass Pros, any of the Lindner shows, and MLF.
Once in a while North American Fishing has a good show.

Funny how times change. I wonder how many different names have evolved through the 'who died and made you ___________' statement over the years?!? Might make for a fun winter, cabin fever thread to see how many we can come up with that the various GreatLakesBass.com 'generations' have heard?

Michigan out of doors is a pretty good and informative show. Zona's show is just plain entertaining. Major League Fishing is a little of all to me. Especially when you mix in some good old Michigan lakes.

Forgot about Fred Trost.   He was ok until he tried to be Consumer Advocate against the Doe in Heat companies.   I think that cost him a lot of $$  and his show.

I saw presentation Jerry Chippeata did trolling for salmon with a camera attached to the cannon ball of a down rigger.   Took them 2 days but they finally had a fish come in view and take the bait.

I to fell for the idea of the indian river burt/mullet, totally pathetic.   meanwhile the facts of fishing runs a close second to being the worst, sad ass humor, horrible music, can stand the host.

Hook & Look by far the best.

IMHO Al Linder has ther best all around fishing show for multi species.  I also enjoy watching Strike King Pro Team Journal and Major League Fishing.  Ultimate Match Fishing has a new season out this year with new rules which is fun to watch.
All in all fishing shows help us to pass the time while the water is hard here in the north country.  There are quite a few to choose from.  Fishing U is usually about promoting products and lures.  They usually catch small fish because they limit themselves to one or two baits the entire show.  I saw the Indian River show.  It was pretty bad, lots of small fish.  In their defense, they fish don't fish many natural lakes so they probably didn't know how to approach it in the given time they had to film the show which was one day with limited tackle (as I stated earlier).  Having said that, I'm not making excuses or knocking down Charlie Ingram beacause I'm sure a lot of people would love to fish across the U.S. filming fishing shows while enjoying the chance to see new bodies of water all around this fine country.

Fishing University is BRUTAL!!! LMAO, I just got done watching it recorded on my DVR.. Got the Full gammit of shows on record to get me thru a couple more weeks until opener.  Every show is all about promoting their sponsors.. I get it, that's why they can be on television, but really... I wonder how much some of these people pull per episode? Better to run the drivethru at mc'y d's..  My favorites on nowdays is "Cabelas Fishermans Handbook" "Fishing Texas" "Bass Pros" & Major league fishing is ok as well.. Cant stand that crazy freaky eyed blond who does the leaderboard updates (she also hosts a show held down in florida for some sort of Tarpon Competition. Also that guy who hosts with the ridiculous southern accent is kind of annoying as well. And I don't have to hear about how great their finder / crankbait / worm / hooks etc etc. are.  These guys seriously sell their souls. lol..

There certainly are a lot of fishing shows to watch these days. A good number of them are tough to watch. I really enjoy the underwater stuff Hook N Look does. The Linder's always do a great job. I would love to see a show from someone on fishing line. What line and sizes to use for the most popular situations. It was not that long ago that mono was pretty much it. You now have so many combinations to choose from it's confusing. A simple explaination with underwater action would be cool for me.

Ultimate Match Fishing is back on and it is right up there with major league fishing.
You can tell that is produced by guys in the industry and not overly influenced by the sponsors.

Don't overlook Timmy Hortons' show.  It is well done and he goes into just enough detail on his rigs/set ups that you learn a thing or two.

Timmy Hortons , Linders, MLF are good. I don't really care for Fishing U or One more cast with Shaw Grigsby. Too much infomercial for me, but I don't feel the need to slam them because of their appearance.  Charlie Ingram just had a top 10 finish in a tournament.  Not trying to be controversial and everyone has an opinion ... but, I think you can voice your opinions; without "bashing" someone's appearance.
