Legislation was reintroduced in this new session that would give fisheries order authority back to the Michigan Natural Resources Commission (NRC) early allowing the seven Commissioners to vote on the bass season a month early at the March 19th meeting.

In order to get public input on proposed regulations to expand Michigan bass fishing seasons, the Department of Natural Resources has announced an online survey and public meetings in July. For the past year the DNR Fisheries Division has been working with the Warmwater Resources Steering Committee to discuss bass seasons.

The Michigan Department of Natural Resources is preparing public meeting schedules and locations for comment on proposed changes to the Michigan bass season. Michigan B.A.S.S. Nation submitted a Bass Season Change Proposal to the MDNR Warmwater Resources Steering Committee on June 17, 2013 to start this latest effort to provide more bass fishing opportunity in Michigan.

Sunday, June 22, 2014 the Michigan United Conservation Clubs state convention delegates voted to adopt the Michigan B.A.S.S. Nation bass season proposal resolution as official policy. A minor friendly amendment suggested by Past-President Paul Rose to the adaptive management section was the only change.

he bass season bill SB 869 was signed by Governor Rick Snyder on Tuesday 6/3/2014. SB 869 was assigned Public Act 145 of 2014 with immediate effect. This removes the previous earliest bass season starting dates from Michigan state law.

The House Natural Resources Committee voted unanimously 9-0 to pass Senate Bill 869 out of committee with a favorable recommendation today. After Chair Andrea LaFontaine opened the hearing, the primary sponsor of SB 869, Michigan Senator Geoff Hansen spoke in support of his bill saying creating a longer bass season will be good for Michigan and benefit our natural resources economy even more by attracting more bass tournaments.

At the March 20, 2014 Senate Outdoor Recreation and Tourism Committee hearing on Senate Bill 869, MDNR Legislative Liaison Trevor VanDyke stated they fully supports eliminating the existing bass season limits from state law because recent science has proven that some of their concerns they have had in the past are no longer as large of a concern and giving flexibility to the NRC to set an earlier season will be good for everyone in Michigan.

The NYS DEC is considering possible regulation changes to increase catch and release bass fishing opportunities. As you should know it has been an extremely long process to get to where we are with the current regulations. And by all accounts bass anglers have thoroughly enjoyed the increased opportunities and bass populations have been sustainable.
