The Amazon Rig for Peacock Bass

I was very fortunate to start a new adventure with Ron Speed Jr's Adventures peacock bass fishing the mighty Rio Negro in the Brazilian Amazon jungle on February 28th, 2012! Traveling aboard the Otter houseboat on the river that produced the IGFA world record is not a bad way to spend 6 days fishing at all!

Check out my short story with a number of pictures from the trip I turned The Alabama Rig into The Amazon Rig! on AlabamaRig.com.

Help stop invasive spcies. Don't move fish between unconnected bodies of water. Clean, drain and dry your boat before launching on another water body.

I'm glad to hear that! I wish I was back there now! Hope to go back some day and give the 'Amazon' Rig another try. And some 'woodchoppin' too while I'm at it!

Here's a few more pictures from the February - March 2012 trip to the Amazon jungle in Brazil along the Rio Negro (Black River).

Casting accuracy required when fishing in high water calling peacock bass out of the jungle early in the morning with a little woodchopper noise!

You can't have the Amazon without Piranhas and we were around them often. There's quite a few varieties and this is a medium-sized 'white' Piranha that my fishing partner, Michael Kinchen of Texas, caught on a big jerkbait while we were trying to locate peacock bass in heavy current breaks. Many of the Piranha like fast current edges along breaks and eddies. The faster current could hold big schools of these chompers! No lipping!

Maybe because the water was high and the current was moving very fast in spots but we had more doubles on the woodchoppers too than before during the February - March 2012 fishing trip to the Amazon's Rio Negro in Brazil. Here's two Peacock Bass that crushed my ripping woodchopper simultaneously along a fast running sand edge! The guide Aligator kept telling me to quite messing around and get the bass in but 'the bass' would not cooperate so well and it turned out the reason was because it had two basspower running with a darker bass hooked underneath providing the power boost!
