Got Fish??

Has the water moved back to the east side of the lake yet? Can I get into the hot pond now? I know a lot of water blew over to the west side last week. My fathers FourWinds is sitting on the bottom of his canal.

Frank

Nope, you can't even get close.  I tried yesterday.  500 yards from the entrance the water is 6 inches deep

How'd that happen?

When the wind blows long enough and hard enough on the Great Lakes, it pushes the water to the windy side of the lake, dropping water levels on the lee side of the lake. When the wind stops, all that water flows back from the windy side to the lee side. Water levels can change 2 feet or more up or down depending upon the strength of the wind. I'm sure he means most of the water has been dragged out of the canal so there's not enough left to float the boat.

I've come back to ramps in rivers and canals on Saginaw Bay that were completely flooded because the wind has pushed so much water back into them. I've also come back to ramps I couldn't get my boat back on the trailer because the water had been 'dragged' out.

I've heard of a few instances where people fishing in the hot pond during a strong West wind couldn't get back out because there was now a 'waterfall' at the mouth instead of a channel. You can also see miniature versions of this water movement in parts of the St. Clair and Detroit Rivers when the big ships pass by.

The bad news is this water movement can sometimes put your boating and/or boat in peril. The good news is that current can make fish bite. The 'current' after the wind dies can be as good as the 'current' during the wind. Maybe just in a different spot(s).

Help stop invasive spcies. Don't move fish between unconnected bodies of water. Clean, drain and dry your boat before launching on another water body.

Got Fish??

That's too bad. I was hoping for a last trip this Thursday. It's going to be 77. Look's like a St Clair trip it will be.

Got Fish??

Maybe I missed it on another page, but I guess last week. Someone tried to get into the pond.Once inside, Could not get out! He was rescued that day by the U.S. Coastgard. US Boat pulled his boat off the sand bar the next day. $$$$$

Are there not going to be any trips to the hot pond this year?

djkimmel

Shore? Carry in (didn't we recently do something like that?!?)?

All that's been said about wind is true.  I also think that the lack of rain and snow this past year has contributed to lower water levels in general.  I haven't been down to the river for about a month now, but when last there the water level was pretty darn low with or without the wind.
So much water.  So many lures.  So little time.

Ooh a chance to ride in your boat instead of just watch it trail behind the Dodge!

Think I read somewhere recently that Lake Michigan is down 14 inches compared to the same time last year.  I know all the harbor lakes on the West side are down big time !!

Got Fish??

It's a good thing, my father took his boat out before the remnants of Sandy came through. He said last week end . He could walk out to the canal, stand on the sea wall. Look down and have 18" of dirt between him and the water. He lives on Grossile.

Makes me glad I put the boat up on that last 75 degree day. Its been crappy ever since.

I went out on Erie both those days and had a great time. Big, active fish. My favorite time of year. Put my boat up on Election Day. Going to work some O.T. at work. When I don't work, I'll be riding with a good buddy out to Erie and Lower Detroit for late fall lunkers. Last year we did "Black Friday" our way.......fishing Erie.   8)
