Fast or slow gears for your spinning reels

Hello all,

I am a big fan of Daiwa spinning reels and I really prefer the lighter models like the Fuego A or the Steez however both of these reels come in a slow 4.8:1 gear ratio.
It seems now a days all the newer high end spinning reels are being made with 6.0:1 gears.

Anyone know what the reason is for the recent boom of faster gears in spinning reels?

I use spinning reels for mainly for dropshotting or drifting the great lakes usually in water 15-35ft.
I think I could actualy use faster gears in my spinning reels just to help keep the bow out of the line (taught) and  catch up quicker to any fish that may run in but there may also be some negatives.

Any thoughts are appreciated.
There may be some advantages of slower gears that I am not aware of when fishing this style.

Thanks all.

By the way I probably already would have bought a Higher end Shimano with a 6:1 gear ratio to try it out but I can't stand the reel  handles...... until you get to the stella and thats a little out of my range.

If you're using them for contact baits, you probably are working the bait with your rod and not the reel, so a faster gear ratio would help you catch up to slack line faster, keep up with fish coming at you, and save a second or two on reeling in errant casts.  Don't really see a downside unless you're using moving baits.
