Got some sweet revenge on ol' Maize last night.  After our last trip to Kent Lake, he had been gloating due to his victory over me for the day.  But now it was my turn, and i let him know it before hand.

We hit the water at about 4:30 and stopped at the hump just west of the east launch along the channel.  After about 15 minutes of searching, we found them holding right on the west end of the hump in about 5 feet of water.  First taker was a 2 lb largemouth that ate a new color tube designed  Ken Neely, owner of KD Outdoors in Waterford, MI.  Ken had given me a couple to try out about a month ago and i kept forgetting to bring them out with me.  But this time i had them.

After a few more cast, and properly positioning the boat, it was on.  I increased my lead over Maize by 4 more fish, making it 5-0.  Included in the 5 were a 5 lb largemouth, a 4 lb smallmouth, a 3.5 lb smallmouth, a 3 lb smallmouth and my first of the day, the 2 lb largie.

I could tell Maize was getting upset, and then i reminded him who he was fishing with, the almighty PB...king of the Kent Lake catching frenzy.  He took that into consideration and i think he started feeling better.  Not long after, he hooked into his first of the day.  A nice 3 lb smallmouth that took a watermelon tube.  Shortly thereafter, he hooked into another smallmouth.  This time it was a good solid 4 lber, again on the watermelon tube.

That was the end of that spot.  We couldnt buy another bite so we headed to another area that has been producing well for us.  Some deep rocks along the channel edge.  I hooked into a FATTY on my first cast, but the fish spit my jig on its first jump.  We struggled for the next 30 minutes to locate them.  We moved out a bit deeper and I finally hooked up with another smallie.  ABout a 3 lber that had the heart of a kamikaze.  This little brusier took me for a ride before accepting defeat and making its way into the net.

Next it was Maizes turn.  And this is the best part.  Realizing that he is taking that oh so familiar beating from McCarter, his desperation leads him to a costly mistake.  He decides that the only way to catch up at this point is to 'double fist' it.  He rigs up two rods with tubes and begins his drag.  After about two minutes, he sets one rod down to reel in the other when out of nowhere the rod he sat down starts bobbing violently.  As he reached down to grab it, it jumps into the air and over the side of the boat.  For a second, he catches it out of mid air and it fumbles back and forth from hand to hand before hitting the water.  Lucky for him, it was an Airrus rod.  The rig is now floating on the surface about 6 feet away from the boat, all the while bobbing and twitching like a 7 foot stick bobber.  I assess the situation and adjust the trolling motor to mach 1, but as soon as i hit the pedal, the fish spooks and pulls the rod below the surface .  We both watch in disgust as $400 works its way deeper and deeper until it is out of sight.  I tell him not to worry, just grab a tube and start dragging, we will surely snag it.  But it was no use.  The rod and reel and fish were long gone.

Maize, now riddled with angst, is sitting in the seat, tube dragging somewhere behind the boat, when all of a sudden a fish picks it up.  He rears back....way back and hooks into what would be his biggest of the day.  A 4.25 lb smallmouth.  I think that cheared him up a bit.  It was a beautiful fish, but it was still not enough to catch up to Big Daddy.

Final Score: McCarter 6, Shively 4.

Kent is really coming on strong right now.  Tubes and jigs have been producing best for us.  The few spots that we have been hitting have been loaded pretty good, although we did not catch as many fish yesterday but caught a lot of quality fish.  We really havent even checked out the rest of the lake.  I am hoping to get some free time after Labor day to go out and beat the rest of the lake up.  Report to follow.

That sounds like a great night. I need to get out there soon and try to find some fish. My buddy's club fished there last night as well, I will have to see how they did.

I would call it a lot of things, but a great night it was not!!!!! I allowed PB to have the front of my boat, since he was just married and prolly won't be allowed to fish to much anymore, and we went to my first spot, where he proceded to kill me using the same line, weight and a very similar tube. Note to self, never let PB in the front of the boat again. Many casts shaved his little teenage goatee, as he left me no choice. Finally with the wind blowing, the boat turned and I stuck 2 smallies on back to back casts, funny how that happens. PB could no longer keep me off the sweet spot, censing a comeback, he declared the spot spent and wanted to move.

We headed over to the bridge and that's where things went very wrong! On his first cast he hooks into football sized smallie, that jumps and spits his jig. So I figured I better do something to catch up in a hurry! So I went to the Double fisted method, something PB does on a regular basis while he takes a beating. As I was reeling my line in, the other rod starts to bend and jump, I immediately drop the hand held rod, only to watch the floor rod jump into the air, through my desperate fingers and into the water. So if anyone snags my Airres rod and my Chronarch MG reel, they get a all expensive paid trip to Hooters. The rod and reel was last seen by the 96 bridge heading straight down in 12 ft of water, attached to it was certainly a 4lb smallie.

Man, that report got my blood boiling and adrenaline flowing. What time of the day were you two out there again? Even though I'm a Quantum baitcaster kind of guy, I might go fishing for Shimano, I mean smallies out at Kent soon. I've got a new President baitcaster I want to try out. When you guys going back????

Bender

Sorry about the loss Maize, I just was thinking about all of the good sized fish that made it in the boat. Next time I get back over there I will try to catch that hawg that swiped your rig.
