Title: 2011 State Championship
Post by: jcox7 on December 14, 2010, 02:27:47 PM
After negotiating with several differnet areas and tourism branches the TBF of Michigan is finally ready to announce the location of the 2011 State Championship.

The State Championship will take place for the first time  on a Saturday, June 4th at Houghton Lake.  It will be put on by the Houghton Lake Visitors Bureau.  This years championship will be like no other the whole experince will be taken to new levels and it should be exciting.

The Houghton Lake area will be rolling out the "red carpet" for us so now all we need to do is show up.  There will be more updates soon on our webpage.  Or if you have any questions I am sure they can be answered here.

Thanks
Jeff Cox

Caseville sounded intriguing but I think it's nice to not have both federations on the same body of water. Houghton Lake on June 4th will mean a ton of keepers caught. The winner will have to find several 3-pounders.

I think its a fantastic choice. I love the area. There are lots of nice bass in the lake. I know all the best places to eat, sleep and party. I cant wait. Already made my reservations.

This year the Bass Federation will be working with the Wisconsin Sea Grant Institute on a project to study, evaluate and develop a set of best practices for tournament anglers for preventing the spread of Invasive Species.
We are inviting members of this group to attend our TBF State Championship.
When they attend, they will be there to pass out literature on invasive species and they will  speak to our group for about 15 minutes at the banquet, friday night. The rest of their mission will be to observe the event and help us determine a set of best practices and practical solutions to help our anglers stop the spread of invasive species.

We think this will be a valuable tool for all of our state federation members and we would encourage you to take advantage of the program.

If you are not fishing the State Championship and would like to come to the banquet and hear the discussion just let me know so that I can add you to the dinner meal numbers.

Is there a hotel that most people plan on staying at?  Did the federation get any discounts?  Also what launch is it going out of?

The place I stay at up there is called The Riviera, 989-366-5122. They have quite a few rooms available. They also have a 2.5 acre locked lot for the boats. The only issue I'm working on with them is electricity. We may have to take turns with charging. They are checking on it, and will get back with me. Its a very nice place to stay, and very resonable.

As it stands right now, they can plug in 6 boats at a time. If they get more reservations, they will supply more electricity for us.

We do have a host hotel up there also we have a host camp ground.  Both are giving nice discounts and they are sending me all the info early next week.  The Hotel is on the Lake and we will be having meetings and weigh ins on the property.  The visitor committee is working on the launch that will best serve everyones needs I understand there are two large launches it sounded to me like they will have us us the one Mid Lake all this is being sorted out at a Board Meeting that happens I believe Monday and I will have a ton of info to send out after all this happens.  Thanks for being so intrested and let everyone know about this years championship.  We would like it to be one of the biggest ever to do so we need to have around 70 boats and I do not see why we cant achieve that goal with a lot of help from all!!!

Thanks
Jeff Cox

Also you can see some info about the TBF open series on face book just search TBF Open Series and check out the info and pass it on to all your friends

Cool Jeff.  Thanks for the information.  See if you can get the camp ground to o.k. single night stays.  Many do not allow single night stays on weekends.

Is the date for the championship June 4th or 11th? I Was looking on the Bass Boys home page and it said the 11th. I just want to make sure on the date before I put in for vacation time at work. Also, what's the name of the host camp ground?

That's my fault. Typo or something. I had it right on the state championship page and fixed the 'home' page - www.greatlakesbass.com/bassboys/

To funny......

Dan and Mike really thanks for the reminders.  I have been real busy and I am trying to stay on top a lot of different things going on.  The State Championship is going in the right direction we just want to make sure things are as good as they can be.  When dealing with townships we have to work at their speed and that is govt speed and we all know how long that can take (look at health care) =)  But as soon as I have it stuff will be emailed and then you or I or someone can get it up here ASAP.  Again thanks

That is all for now.  Stay tuned for more updates... in the future... no not now.

Oh wait... dishes, laundry, dinner, vacuming, and milk in a sippy cup now and then.   ;D

And I am NO politician, that's for sure.  Though I think I would make a great governor for this great state of ours.  I have no problem telling people/groups/big business NO.

Mike,
Dont Hate you get to take care of the liitle babies that work for you all the time.  The next time one says they do not feel good and are not coming in just slap a sippy cup in their mouth and tell them to toughen up!!

Grass
Not yet but I heard that the campgrounds might even open next week???  I would think it is hard to negoitiate prices when they are closed for the winter??  No worries I am sure everyone will find a place to sleep!!

Nope.  Jeff probably doesn't feel good after his trip to Ann Arbor yesterday and being forced by his son (who obviously has great taste in colleges) to watch the Wolverines win.  Again.

OK Jeff... put the sippy cup down and get to work.

Ok so I got out of bed today and figured why not do some of this work so all you guys would well.....you know

The host resort is at Rivera Resort on Houghton Lake.  The contact information is (989) 366-5122 you can ask for Christina she would be the most helpful I am sure.  The prices are between 65-180 a night however the 180 a night studio has 2 bathrooms kitchen living room and two bedrooms it also sleeps 6 so all in all it is a good price if you share it with some others.  Also they do have areas that you can keep your boat in the water if you would like and that is free.  Just I am sure there is a limit to the space they have.

The weigh in will be held at the host resort so it might be nice to show your support to the Resort by staying there.  Christina is the owner of the resort and she is the one that is taking care of all of our needs while we are there that weekend.

The Host campground is wooded acres campground, they do have many options from just electric (yes you can plug your boats in on site.)to water, electric, septic all the goodies.  The base price that he has given us is a 20% discount as long as you tell them you are with the TBF of MIchigan fishing group.  The price for the site with electric is a little less than 25.00 a night.  There are only 40 sites that get this discount so please if you are going to stay there get it in.  The number is 989-366-5913, the gentlemans namen is Dave Cecil

They are putting together a dinner menu.  The township is going to feed us a nice catered dinner at the pre meeting.  If there are any suggestions of what they should feed us let me know.  But lets be realistic here please.

I will be sending out a flier next week to all with more info but feel free to pass this on to anyone that might need the info.

Also I have decided to have a contest:  The first person to get six members to sign up that were not members last year.  I will pay their entry fee, and if that member makes the state team I will pay your entry fee again next year!!  Could be worth 200 bucks!!!

Pre-meeting is Friday night June 3rd.  Tourney is Saturday June 4th.  I (and I'm sure many others) want to make sure I make reservations for the correct nights!!

And thanks for all the work you've done.  Very much appreciated.

In no particular order:

Marc Snyder
Jason Knapp
Don Watts
Mark Goetsch
Rick Roberts
Bill Simpson
Mark Modrak
Randy Ramsey
Skip Johnson
Me and 2 others I apparently forgot.

Fishing was very tough.  I caught all my fish in the canals some males on beds and some crusing the weed line.  When they were on the bed I caught them on a brovarney swim jig with a revolution bait kick'r craw.  When they were cruising I caught them on a wacky rigged senko.  The wacky rig seemed to make a differance because my nonboater was throwing one texas rigged all day with only one fish then he switch to wacky for the last hour and added 3 more fish to his side of the livewell.

I caught 4 out of 5 in the channels, mainly under docks and boats. Fished a wacky rigged worm most of the day. Caught a ton of fish, but no monsters, but for only my second TBF tourney, I'm thrilled with my finish and excited and honored to have made the state team.

I caught all of my fish on the main lake. I had three decent smallies on beds that I found the day before, I caught them pretty quick in the morning. Went to my second spot and caught my big fish which was a largemouth on a C-flash crankbait, I also caught a couple more smallies there on a crankbait. I went to a spot that I found Monday when I was there that had some smallies on beds. I wound up catching a good one there Im sure was off a bed. When I was there on Monday I found alot of smallies on beds on the west shoreline. Unfortunately with all of the wind they had during the week it was all muddied up and had pushed all the shallow fish off their beds, the one that I caught over there was in deeper water. I wound up catching some more on the crankbait but nothing that would help. All in all it was a pretty good day of fishing.

I was there on Friday prefishing. Caught 3 keeper size smallies and two nice walleye, all on a redeye shad. All off the south shore. On Saturday, I defered to my boater, Jason Knapp, and we started on the west side of the lake. I started with the redeye because I had success the day before. Nothing. Jason started catching them with a combination of fluke and senco. I switched. LOL. I caught a couple decent smallies. We then moved into the channels, throwing sencos under and around anything we could find. Lots of smaller size largies. I did manage one keeper. Jason was culling by this time. Late in the day, I still had only 3 fish on board. I was getting desperate. I had tried everything in my tackle bag. We headed over toward the launch around 1:45. I told Jason, "right over there is where I caught that one really nice one on Friday". We headed in that direction. I ended up catching my biggest of the day. Another smallie, on a Husky Jerk, of all things. I threw my arms off for the next 20 mins, but could not find that 5th fish anywhere. I felt pretty good about the tourney. It was definatly a tough bite for most. I ended up in the top half of the fishermen somewhere. I want to thank my boater, Jason for the time of my life. It was an awesome day, and he is one heck of a fisherman, as the results show. He was very helpful and I learned a great deal. All in all, it was a tremendous experience.

First off I'd like to thanks all the anglers that fished our event this year!

I had never been to Houghton before and was looking forward to fishing the lake. As usual between work and planning for the event I ended up arriving am 1:00 am friday morning, hooked up with John Jezerski who was kind enough to let my brother and I sleep at his uncles cottage. Needless to say I didn't get out at the crack of dawn and only had about 4 hours to prefish.

We started out trying the hot tip waypoints for smallies, I was supposed to get 18 lbs. Well that didn't pan out so I headed for the canals for largemouth and got on a decent topwater bite, probably had 12 pounds, my smallest would have been 2 pounds. Well the hot topwater bite and my best area didn't go as planned on our first stop for the tourney. My draw partner Gary Emery started getting them on a senko and it didn't take me long to change. We hit a few more canals and I had 3 keepers and he had 4. I figured it would be best to spend some time trying to find some smallies and we messed around for about 2 1/2 hours, Gary got his 5th fish, but one was questionable length, it would be a close call.

After that we got back to running the canals and we were picking up a lot of shorts but no keepers. At about 2:10 we pulled into a canal and about 2:15 I picked up my fourth and a couple of minutes later Gary got a decent one. The questionable fish was culled and we hustled back feeling there was a good chance for him to make the team. We made it back at about 2:25 with a few minutes to spare.

Gary ended up finishing 7th and made the state team. Gary was a great guy to fish with and I'm gald he amde the team. All in all I really enjoyed the day, we caught a lot of fish and the water was actually flat under my boat. In retrospect if we had just stayed on the largemouth we both would have probalby qualified.

Congats to all those that made the State Team. I think we've got a great team we're sending to Wisconsin! Thanks as well to Houghton Lake Chamber of Commerce the Pig Roast at the registration was great!
