Title: Midwest Sportsman Mich Div 20 (Huron Valley)
Post by: ebond on April 10, 2009, 03:42:47 PM
Bass Tournament Enthusiasts,

I hope you plan to compete in the Midwest Sportsman Michigan Division 20 team bass tournament trail. All six events will be held on Sundays in the Ann Arbor area on numerous lakes connected to the Huron River. The entry fee for each event will be $100, including $90 paid back at 90% to the top finishing teams, and $10 for big bass paid back at 100% to a single team.

Teams will qualify for the Michigan Classic based on their best 4 finishes. Teams fishing at least 5 events will automatically qualify. A substitute partner may be used up to two times. Membership dues of $40 are required for each participant during the first three events. Non-members are invited to join us at the final three events. Only members will earn points toward the standings.

Registrations will begin Sunday mornings at 6:00 AM at the launch, payable in cash only. Tournaments will last from 7:00 AM until 3:00 PM, except as noted for Portage Lake, where registration will begin at 7:00 AM at Riverside Pizza, across from the launch. Teams will also be required to pay an additional $5 at Portage Lake to offset the cost of the DNR site use permit, with any surplus used for buying pizza for participants at the weigh-in.

My good friend, Grant Shively, will be the assistant director and my teammate at every event. He can be contacted at 734-478-1218 or grantgoblue@hotmail.com. Volunteers and sponsors are invited to contact us if they wish to contribute. We look forward to conducting events that are well run and fun to fish. Please tell your friends about this new trail. Thanks for your interest. We'll see you at the lakes!

Eric,

I was under the impression that there was an NBAA that had pulled a permit and was going out of that launch that day, 8/16/09.  I had received the flyer from Adam Hieber at our open house on March 30.  Now I see you posting your tounament schedule on 4/10 with the same date.  I did not think they allowed 2 tournaments to go out of the same launch.

Please let us know for sure.
Thanks,

Just to confirm...NBAA will be launching out of the WEST RAMP that day.  This "other" tournament is launching out of the East for some reason...

nevermind, seen the date.  No biggie.  Kent fishes big.  It can handle 2 tournaments as long as we are at different launches.  I dont think you need "permits" for kent.  You just have to call Dick Shaeffer and let him know your coming that way they dont schedule 2 tournaments at the same launch on the same day.  But it happens.

Yeah, I agree, there's plenty of room.  The permit we received back in January had the incorrect date written in by whomever types those things up over there at Kent Lake, no bid deal...all it took was a phone call to clear it up once we figured out it happened.  Why someone would knowingly schedule another one for that same day is beyond me...especially considering we've been posted on NBAA's site since late Jan/early Feb and I handed my schedule to the director of the other tourney going out of the East Ramp when I saw him at the Wonderland show, which is before his was even scheduled.  We'd have better payouts if we just had the 1 tourney instead of 2.  Most are probably NBAA members anyway, hope to see you all at the West Ramp, don't whoop us too bad, should be fun event.

Sorry for the overlap! I was not thinking about NBAA when we were asked by MWS to add a sixth event to our series on a tight deadline. The park superintendent said the date was open and it was the perfect fit for our trail. They approved the permit April 2. I have never had any problems getting permits at Kensington.

This scheduling conflict was unintended. Anglers from both trails are earning points toward a championship, so jackpotters are not likely to pay a membership fee just to fish this lake on this date, anyway. Hopefully the members were not planning to fish both trails. I doubt either event will suffer much as a result.

Midwest Sportsman teams use only 4 of 6 events to qualify for the championships. If we lose a few teams that day to NBAA because of a typo, I won't mind. Both trails have something to offer, depending on the desires of their members. 8)

something is up with Midwest Sportsman website, when you go there and try to click on the Michigan tab....it doesn't link to anything??

i'd like to view all of the divisions in Michigan, but especially something around mid-Michigan.

The MI page link has a typo. It reads www,mwfishingmi.com instead of www.mwfishingmi.com. But the information has not been updated since '08. You might want to contact Michigan Director Mike Pierce at 517-462-0239. 8)

Visit South Street Tackle in Belleville to pick up the new Huron Valley Sunday division flier, featuring two events on Belleville Lake, or the complete schedule of the 20 Midwest Sportsman Michigan divisions, or the Belleville Lake Thursday division flier. The bass bait selection at South Street Tackle is first rate.

Our flier, as well as the complete Michigan divisions flier, is also available at Gander Mountain in Novi. They are conveniently located across from Twelve Oaks Mall. They have a good selection of the top brands we all use for catching bass. I am still looking for a tackle store near Portage Lake which is ideal for carrying our fliers. Any help on getting the word out to anglers who might like to fish with us will be appreciated. 8)

Thank you.

I have phone numbers of the Directors for the Mondays in my area, but I run an NBAA div that night, but heard there was a Tuesday night division, but I have no idea who, where, pr how to get ahold of anyone on that one.  Thanks for the info.

Great tournament!  Eric and Grant did a stellar job and the payouts were very high.

Congrats to Jess Scott and Barry Bucharelli for 1st and big bass

and Eric and Grant took 2nd place.

there were 8 or 9 boats but only 4 boats weighed in.

Well, I don't know about "stellar".  Least they could have done was to reserve us a slip to load up when we got in.   ;D

That ramp's a cluster when it gets busy.  That's probably one of the worst waits I've had at Belleville.

Always strikes me funny since the scenario is always the same.  Dad drives the truck to the ramp.  They wait in line and then take the straps off once they get in position to back up.  The backing actually takes a couple of tries till hull hits water.  Then they gotta tie up at the dock, preventing anyone else from using it while they unload all the kids & gear.  Then dad parks the truck, and gets back to the boat; of course it won't start.  Never heard of muffs & a hose in the driveway first.

Throw in a few arguments by those waiting to put in having their spot taken by someone trying to get out, and you got a bad Jerry Springer episode.

Life is to short to waste it at the ramp... ;)
Title: Re: Midwest Sportsman Mich Div 20 (Huron Valley)
Post by: ebond on June 15, 2009, 11:33:47 PM
The place was very busy and, not surprisingly, slow, due to folks not knowing how to drive the boat. This simple logic problem perplexes the average pleasure boater. I recently gave my 15 year old cousin a crash course on boat operation at the ramp and backed him into the lake!

Would you believe he had no problem with on/off, forward/neutral/reverse (no brakes!), and a steering wheel? Maybe we can offer how-to pamphlets or something at the ramps when they get clogged up. Everything takes more than twice as long when the next rig has to wait for the ramp to become open. That was pretty ugly.

But the tournament was great! Kent Lake should be much better with its ten ramps, although parking can be tight. And I expect more teams to catch nice limits. McCarter's Tuesday night tournament next week should be the perfect sneak preview for our next tournament. Thanks again for coming to our inaugural event. I think we have a solid trail forming here. 8)

Oh, by the way, I am sure glad "Mark117" was a no-show. Grant and I would have been bumped down to 3rd. After all, he did say:

"I was thinking of getting a part time job but this sounds like easy money.  See you out there, i will be the guy weighing in more fish than you  :-*

Jon "technique specialist" Jezierski"

Maybe we should forget to remind him about Kent, just to be on the safe side. 8)

He said he would be at Kent.  He will drop the hammer on you and Grant, but me and Kev will prevail victorious and will be calling all the other teams all sorts of mean names.  And maybe even throwing used Nemesis Sickos at you guys as we walk back to the boat as the true Kent Lake Champions.

Steve if you think this is bad you should see us at the ramp ;D

In all seriousness tho, we all know each other and are just having fun with it.  its cool fishing a trail where you know everyone else.  Never done that before.  At the Belleville tournament there were literally only 3 guys i didnt know well enough to call one of my friends, i met 2 of them but the other guys was busy prepping the boat and then they didnt come to weigh in.  so, i made 2 new friends and look forward to making a few more at Kent.  You should come check it out.  I will bring you a Mt Dew!

BLAH,BLAH,BLAH,BLAH, BLAH! all I can say is I feel sorry for you Grant??? Been there and done that.

Congrats to Eric and Jeff on their big win at the KENT LAKE OPEN. I'm proud of myself for not showing Grant all of Eric's spots. Eric can get mean if you show up on HIS kent uninvited.
Thanks Grant for your many days of practice and help on kent, with a top 5 finish. Not bad for a couple of rookies.

Oh ya, sorry, i thought all of the midwest sportsman tourneys were on Kent? my bad. Just thinking that if Eric has a chance to win, they would all be on KENT?

Eric, stay out of my reeds!!  Thanks

I'd like to thank all the teams that showed up on Belleville. Congrats to Jess and Gary. Ironic that the guys that didn't do any smack talk won, go figure. It was great seeing some new faces and some old ones. Lots of good sticks were there. It's great that we all can talk some smack then go fish, then watch McCarter limp home. There should be a replay at Kent. I'm really looking forward to fishing Kent, with so many of us considering Kent our home lake, should be real interesting, if nothing else, the ramp talk will be amusing.

Steve all this talk is the G version, should hear us in the boat, just fun fishing!

Everybody give Jon a hand for putting up with me and not writing a memoir! He and Grant are rookies on Kent like Bobby Lane was a rookie in the Elite Series last year...NOT! That would make Jeff Cox my rookie partner, too. These rookies are pretty good bass fishermen.

I am just lucky because Kent Lake is close to me and full of bass. I expect the home lake jinx to be in full force for all of us. McCarter is clearly the guy who spends more time on Kent than any of us, so he must be the favorite. Maybe it will be Lightningboy (and Jr) who comes from afar to put the beatdown on everybody.

Any team can catch 15 lbs on Kent on a good day. The fishing is unpredictable and the outcome is anybody's guess. So lets see some new faces at the ramp Tuesday evening and again Sunday morning for the big prize. The late postspawn transition is underway. Good luck out there! 8)

I am still waiting on that DEW.  You bringing it to the DRO tomorrow?  I will need it when I am checking boats in....lol

The guy at the golden drake is a pretty good guy, and he actually carries quite a few baits for how small the shop is.

Ahhh Belleville lake, I had a good time at the tourny although all I caught was multiple 13.50" smallmouth and a snake skin (yes......a used snake skin!....cut line immediately!) Hopefully we'll do better at kent, see you guys there.

Grant and I abandoned the smallies after 2 hours due to a slow bite and small fish. The top 2 places had all largies. We had several teams that weren't able to be there, so this Sunday should be a much better turnout. So far there are over 10 teams planning to show up. Here is a sample payout for what we hope is our average turnout for the rest of the year:

The DRO?! I might have caught 17 to 17 1/2 lbs if things went well. My target weight is 20 lbs or more for that event, but it wasn't likely this year. I need to find some new fish.

Tell your buddies at NBAA to raise the entry to at least $200 and guarantee at least $7500 for 1st place. We will get 150 boats or more next year if they do. You guys did a nice job this year. Thanks. 8)

It would not have mattered if you fished my spot. You would not have been able to catch my fish at Belleville Lake. If every team that says they will show up actually does, we will have more than 10 teams. We missed you at Belleville Lake.

New teams can still qualify for the Classic by fishing the next 4 events, since the standings allow only the top 4 finishes. 8)

I need to learn how to speak "Jezierski". Until then, can someone please translate this question for him:

Results of what?

Are Chris and Deven planning to practice on Ford Lake to show Jezierski how to catch bass there, too? He could be tough to beat if they do.

I will just have to settle for finding fish and figuring out how to catch them myself. It is very rewarding. 8)

I hope not!  Because Chris worked very hard for those five bass.....ice, rejuve, please release me.....all used in our boat?
5 bass, 5 alive

I wish I was there to witness the fish. Some say it was dead?
Please don't hold a grudge at Ford we will need every once for the win....

anyone looking for a good tourney, come out to FORD Sun. 12th!!

Hope everyone is planning on fishing FORD LK this Sunday! You still can make the championship at Wixom if you fish the last 4....

Who wants to come out and shut me up?  See you sunday at ford...

GOOD LUCK!

p.s. Eric, don't be mad? Just having a little fun... to everyone else sorry for my childish acts and name calling!   OVER AND OUT!

Suggesting that I am not capable of determining whether a dead fish penalty should apply is no way to encourage more teams to compete in our trail.

On the other hand, hearing you predict a win then watching you lose by more than one pound is definitely worth the price of admission! 8)

Any new teams planning to fish the last 4 events will need to be capable and consistent to qualify for the classic at this point. There are many skilled anglers currently competing with us. At least the payouts are good enough to attract local jackpotters who think they can dominate on their home lake. Four different lakes remain: Ford, Belleville, Kent, Portage.

Ford lake is loaded with keeper smallies and has some nice largies as well. Ounces will be critical, and one quality bite could secure the win and big bass. I have fished out there only 3 days in my lifetime and have a lot to learn. I know it's a fun and challenging place to fish for bass. We'll see you out there Sunday. 8)

Yes, yes! Eric and Grant are doing a fine job.  ;D
Sorry, just making a little joke between Eric and myself?
They won fair and square! The dead fish penalty is a joke? We lost, they won!  Keep up the good work!

I was out with josh on tuesday to FORD LK and josh caught the only keeper? a 3lb smallie... again, I will be looking for help from Chris and anyone else for the big win on FORD? ;D

CAN YOU SAY DD22's?  sounds like a blast!

you guys are still my favorite.  Its like watching 2 drunk uncles arguing over the last hot dog at the family picnic.

Me and Kev are having some bad luck this year but hope to turn it around on Ford this sunday.  I have never seen Ford Lake.  Going out there Saturday to poke around and see if Nemesis Baits will work out there.  Been catching most of my fish lately on our shakey worm and shakey heads.  Kent has been tooooouuuugh.  NBAA the other night had 26 teams and 4 bass for 6 lbs and change won it.  Sounds like Ford fishes like that all the time.  I like tough fishing and finessing but hope to get onto an early morning smallie bite with a little secret bait action.  See you drunk uncles there, bring plenty of tp to whipe your hineys and noses when me and kev put the hurt on em!

you better just stop, you're scaring the kids?  I'm thinking about maybe skippin this one... let chris win it by himself?  He's a very good deep structure fisherman.  At ford i didn't catch a keeper and josh did? last night at kent i lost my mojo and josh won't let it go?? he said he doesn't need me to win? he had the tourney won in the first 30 min.? He said I was talking to much and was very distracting? Hum?   Focus kid!

is there a spell check in this system? I can't spell...

it was brutal.  that lake fishes very tough.  the same guys won again.  they had 5 for 10+ lbs.  Ron Foley from South Street Tackle took 2nd with 4 for 6 lbs and Kev and I had 3rd with 2 fish for 2.6 lbs.

two boats weighed 1 fish and 3 boats zeroed i think.

eric should have the full results posted soon.

Ford Lake is about the toughest lake i have ever fished.  We probably caught 60 fish in 8 hours but only 2 were keepers.  I have never had so many bites in a tournament. They were eating the DS really good both the Nemesis Goby and the Gulp Goby and also Berkley 3" Fry Worm.  And we caught a bunch of fish on jigs as well.  We gave the bump board a good workout but only got 2 to squeak past the 14" line.  Hope Belleville is better to us in 2 weeks.  My wife is getting a little impatient waiting for me to bring home the bacon.

Results will normally be posted here at GreatLakesBass.com by Monday after each event. The membership fee will be waived for new teams wanting to enter any of the next three events. We hope more teams will join us and invite some friends and rivals to compete for a nice payout. 8)

I fished Ford Lake the week before the tourny (first time on the lake) and caught a bunch of 12 and 13 inch fish, but wasnt able to locate anything with any size. I would have been at the tourny but my fishin parter cancel on me at 11pm on saturday. Where abouts were you guys catching these keepers, if you dont mind me asking?

Consider yourself lucky. All our keepers come from other lakes, we didn't have anything to weigh in there. I won't be going back to Ford, even nicked my prop to throw a little salt on the wound.

Non-members competing in the final three qualifying events will not be earning points in the division standings. Otherwise, fewer points would be available to members attempting to qualify for the classic. Members will earn points based on the place they finish compared to other members.

Lets see a big turnout and big cash prizes for the top anglers. I expect the members to hold their own against any local experts. Just like the first three events, the competition should be tough, and the winners will earn their victories and a nice payout. 8)

Thanks to the new teams for competing at Belleville Lake. Now that the membership fee has been waived, turnouts will be up. We hope even more new teams will be at our next tournament on Kent Lake on Sunday, August 16. Have a look at the nice payouts in the results link below and make your plans to attend. 8)

As expected, we had our best turnout of the year at Kent Lake. The bass fishing was impressive and the payouts were tremendous, as you can see by clicking the link below. Thanks to the new non-member teams for participating, and especially thanks to members of other Midwest Sportsman divisions in our area for their support.

Special thanks to Midwest Sportsman Division 12 Director Dave Wilson for his help. Please consider entering his events at Lobdell Lake August 22 and Kent Lake August 29. He can be reached at 734-476-1385 for more details. We expect another solid turnout at our next Huron Valley tournament on Portage Lake on Sunday, September 6. 8)

Portage Lake provided lots of keeper bass as expected, resulting in a tight race for a finish in the money. Thanks to the dedicated anglers for participating on a holiday weekend that featured beautiful weather and heavy boat traffic. Special thanks to Jon Jezierski for assisting with the weigh-in.

Congratulations to Jesse Scott and Gary Bucciarelli for winning the Team of the Year Award. The competition was strong at every event, yet they proved to be the team to beat from day one. Click on the link below for more details.

Thanks again to all the anglers who made this new Midwest Sportsman division a success this year. Seven teams have qualified for the Classic on Wixom Lake next month. Good luck to every team competing for a share of the $10,000 prize purse! 8)
