Title: What's the sweetest thing...
Post by: blakstr1 on March 14, 2006, 11:17:58 AM
So everybody (at least I think) has a favorite moment or action that occurs while fishing, maybe its hooking a 5lber, maybe its spending time with somebody, whatever...let's hear what they are if they aren't too personal to share...

Mine is going to be the feel of the warm boat carpet on my bare feet on a nice warm day... everytime I feel the sun on my feet no matter where I'm at I am taken back to all those fishing memories...

of course I have a bunch of others too, but this is one of the favorites..

thats a tough one to narrow down.

I get goose bumps just thinking about the first day i take the boat out.  Where to start.  what to use.  that first bite and hookset of the year.

So many possibilities.  But i think there is one thing that can trump all those feelings.  For me at least.  That would be the night before the first tournament of the year.  I never sleep.  I get all my stuff ready early and jump in the sack usually before 9 pm then i just lie there and wait.  All the while with a smile from ear to ear.  The anticipation of the alarm sounding is enough to get me out of bed 2 hours early so i dont have to put my fiance through the anguish of being spooked by buzzing of the clock.  I always eat a good breakfast and double check everything before i head to the launch.  There is one thing i always forget to do tho.  I never use the bathroom before i leave.  Which means by the time i get to launch you better get out of my way.  No time for stopping and talking when the bladder is full.

We have a tradition in the ABA.  Every year for our first tourament, we lower our hats, place the right hand over our hearts and listen to the star spangled banner.  That always get me pumped up.  Gotta love it.

Boy this was a tough at first then I realized what it is for me.  I am not trying to get all religious on anyone...but

God's Beauty

Sunrises/Sunsets
Rainbows
Huge fish - musky, Sturgeon
Wildlife
My kids

I have been able to experience so many cool things from being a fisherman (including friendships) and I thank God for many of them.

Well said....my wife always gets on me for missing church during the tournament season, but I almost feel the closest to God when I'm out in nature experiencing first hand what a GLORIOUS God we have.

Moments like these. Also the feel of warm carpet on my feet for the first time each year.
Sun on my face after a long winter and a tug on the line.

My son caught his first smallie all by himself this past summer on Kent. reeled it in and landed it all by him self. It was great, I looked back at my wife and she was crying wich made me cry a little. If heaven is better than this we are all in for a treat.

For me believe it or not.... and no matter what is happening, weather I'm fishing a tournament or practicing... it is as simple and un-eventfull as it gets, but it's when I turn around from the trolling motor and sit down on my front deck in between my consouls... and just re-tie.

I always feel this sensation of warmth and relaxation... it's kind of like hitting the reset button.

Stupid huh? But that's it.
for those of you who know me... I'm sure you can see where that would work, and for those of you who don't know me... well... let's just say I don't fish to relax.

Regular fishing days - its being on a still lake before everyone else is out of bed.  No speed boats, no jet skis, nobody screaming and yelling.  That really is the best part of fishing for me.

On tournament days - it's the deeeeep breath I take after the first cast hits the water.  As I try to slow my body down from the anticipation I have felt since the night before.

The feeling of anticipation, either making that first cast or idling out in the tournament boat line, there is no better feeling (especially if your on em!). And all that is provided by mother nature. I try not to get too worked up before the event, being it fun fishing or tournament fishing, it makes for a much more enjoyable day.

I also get that warm fuzzy feeling watching and listening to my 2 boys making wagers on who's going to catch what and how big, and then having them try to outdo each other once we get into some fish, then they decide it's them against me and that gets my intensity up.

My favorite moment was also a deeply spiritual one from about 5 years ago.  One evening after sunset, I was making my way down the long canal back to the launch.  I had the whole canal to myself and it was so quiet that you could hear the crickets and frogs.  There was no breeze so the water was completely calm.  I slowed the boat and closed my eyes for a moment and at that moment I realized not only the beauty of God's awesome creation, but I also realized how blessed and fortunate I am to even be able to own a boat and enjoy something so peaceful and wonderful.  That feeling of gratitude has never left me and every time I'm on the water I feel thankful.

There are alot of things that I enjoy,  I enjoy being with all my friends,  which I have withdrawals from all winter because they are all down in Jackson,  but I think the best for me is the fact that weather I'm fishin and 3 hour or an 8 hour tournament I get my husband all to myself for all that time.  Doesn't matter that I have to share him with the outdoors,  there is just something about being out there with him that makes it special.

I love fishing with other people too but it's just not the same as it is when I fish with him.  Special.

My absolute favorite thing about tournaments is that anticipation and rush when the few numbers before yours are being called... and then up comes yours and you blast off... its one of the greatest feelings ever...

As for fishing in general, it has to be the peacefulness of the sport and the time you have by yourself out there is priceless... the currents, the blue of the water, those nice brown fish, the birds, the sun... everything... and we're so blessed to have it... to be able to experiece it... I thank God before, during and after my days on the water...

The night before the first tournament is unbearable sweet. I check everything at least three times. I can't sleep or think about anything else except the next day. It drives my wife crazy.

The first time I drop the hammer the first time out each year is also a rush.

The BEST thing is when my grown daughters call and ask me to take them fishing. I can't wait until my grandson is old enough to take fishing. He just turned 1 so it won't be long now!

Wow. What a great topic to see on one of these websites. At last someone is talking about what it is all about, instead of who did what. This is in itself one of those sweetest things.

For me it all starts with the crack of the Mercury firing up. Then seeing the daybreak on the eastern horizon as I idle through the smoke of the other engines. Those 10 minutes before take off are some of the most precious moments in my life. A time to pray and give thanks that we live in a country where we have this right. Seeing the look in my opponents eyes as we are all full of about as much ambition as we are ever going to have for the rest of that day.
A favorite song echoes in the back of my mind as you here boat #1 shouted in the distance. As I watch  the eruption of the morning arriving as one by one boats disappear into the sunrise.
I remember that it is a new day and a new start every time I go out whether tournament or not. A chance to become as one with the environment I am in. I love sharing this time with whoever is with me and hoping that they see it just as I do.

Yep, my pond is about 95% open and the geese, ducks are already back.  We have had the same pair of geese on the pond for the last 5 years.  I know they are the same becasue they are the only ones that ignore me as I yell at them and try to scare them away.  I have also seen mallards and woodies so far.  We should be seeing the buffle heads and hooded mergansers soon, though they do not hang around long.  These two and the male wood ducks are the most beatiful of all the ducks that I know of.

The sweetest thing for me is the first time I put waders on in the spring to go out and chase Smallies on the River Raisin. The air is cool and you can see you breath when you stand in the shade. It reminds me of those football movies. And the cool water that splashes in your face when you hook in to that first Smallies of the year. All this will be coming a little earlier this year. Can't wait. There is nothing like wadeing a small stream for Smallies nothing, ok maybe catching a world record bass, but other than that nothing in fishing will come that close.

gots to go w/the early morning sunrises, the peacefulness(?) sights & sounds. listening to the carp (they're never bass) breaking the top surface.  cranking up the big motor shooting across the lake to your first spot of the day. tournament mornings, the smell of engine exhaust - AWESOME!!!!

When I look back there's no question the best thing was fishing with my kid. When I look forward it's to the week she comes back home each summer to fish with her dad.
Don't miss this part boys, it's as good as it gets.

The kids thing.  That's if for me too.

One of my favorite sites is to look behind my boat when I'm on plane, and see the wake that's created on a calm lake, w/ the sunset in the background.

Priceless.

Oh man, this is an easy one.  I really like to fish with people, but the time that I like the best are the solo trips, when I just get this huge chance to be free and reset all my stress back to zero.

So the sweetest thing has to be that moment on a solo trip when the water is flat calm, the sun has just risen, and you have landed the first toad of the day on about the 5th cast.  After releasing him, you sit down on the deck to retie your line, and as you scratch your chin you get a whiff of that familiar and wonderfull fish smell on your hands.  At that moment you look up at your surroundings, and notice the fine details of the morning and the beauty of nature around you, and the only person awake and enjoying it at that moment is you.  At that very moment, when you take a deep breathe and you realize that the whole day is still ahead of you, and this is going to be one of those great days when the fish hit anything you throw, and you are going to uncover some great new pattern......    right then in that very second is the sweetest thing about what we are all obsessed with.

I know you've had that moment, so just close your eyes for a second and think back to it......   not too much longer now guys, and we'll be back at it again!

Wooohoooo! ;D

Moving through the Sport and RV show today I ran in to a fishing buddy that we travel with once the water is soft. I went to shake his hand and exchange cordials and ended up in a bear hug. It reminded me of what this fishing thing is all about for me. Reading Savages post, I can certainly relate to that quiet time by yourself in the boat watching the sun break over the tree tops and the smells that go with this game. The scents from the soft plastics, the fish smell on your hands, it is all that, but as I get older I realize this life will end some day and all you can really leave people is memories. Making sure you tell those people you are close too, your family yes, but your fishing family as well, how much it has all meant to you. Don't miss that chance and then go out and enjoy each day for what it has to offer. If it affords you the chance to plop your rear on a butt seat and cajole with that worthless partner in the back - man then you got it made.

Man is that ever true.  I love being out there by myself for sure.  But there are also times when I don't want to be alone on the water.  I want to share that time with a fishing buddy.  The fishing buddies usually end up being my best friends.  And I appreciate them all.

It's not the last Saturday in April yet, but I did open the camper the other day and will bring the tackle in the house this weekend to start organizing it and replacing stuff with all the new stuff I bought this off-season.  So it's getting close.  Can't wait to start doing a a little Walleye fishing in first few weeks of April.  It's not my favorite kind of fishing, but at least I can get the boat out and get her warmed up for the season.  Can't wait!

Oh yeah, and I anticipate a new "Sweetest Memory" to occur this year.  This will be first year that my wife will be my partner for a trail.  She's gonna fish an NBAA inland lake division with me this year.  She's my best friend, so I can't wait for that newest "Sweetest Memory" to develop this year.  It's gonna be a great season!

HMMMM so many things, I love it all. From rigging up everything the night before, planning for a tourney. The look from the gas station attendant at 4am when I pull in to get coffee, and they can see the excitment in my face, the boat behind my truck, and seeing that look on there face. Beating Poor Boy, watching the sun rise, but perhaps my fav, is just fun fishing with my buddies, and nobody says a word for hours, but we all know how much fun we are having on the water.

This is a fun time for me as well, leaving the house about 3 or 3:30, you see all sorts of stuff.  I've seen a very drunk couple "fun wrestling" ::)  on the hood of a car in a bar parking lot, last year there were a couple guys passed out in a car at the 7-11 with spilled SLURPIES all over them (their car door was open and one of them was half in and half out)...the gas station attendant usually asks where we have been, and I always re-explain the situation to them...FUN TIMES!  ;D

Good one.

I like bcbasser's idea too. I was out on Lake Lansing with a regular fishing partner, who is now apparently permanently tethered by cellular technology. We're fishing a point and his phone goes off for the 8,000th time that morning.

A lady doing yard work nearby stands up and says, "Cell phone? I didn't think there were any cell phones allowed in fishing???"

Me neither... (but I'm now tethered somewhat too although I seem to fish out of reach of the towers a lot...)

I have to say that the "sweetest thing" is hearing my 12 year old daughter say,"Dad I got another one.  Dad, do the smallies on Lake St. Clair always fight like this.  I just love this lake, Dad.  Can we come back here next Saturday and Sunday???"  Usually when my daughter is fishing with me, the cell phone goes off less because my wife knows that we are having a lot of fun and that my daughter and I are spending precious time together doing what we love...........

The smell of 2 cycle outboard exhaust lingering in the air on an early morning while the sun is rising. The second best thing is that mushy feeling on your line after feeling a hard "thump" on your jig. If you have experienced this before you know what to do next.

Waking up 20 minutes before the alarm clock, kissing my wife on the forehead while she's still sleeping and saying I love you; then walking outside in the dark and hearing the birds chirping on the way to the barn where I encounter a sparkling red/black Triton awaiting action. Everything after this is icing on the cake.

What an awesome thread to read. I am new to the site and this thread alone makes me love this site. This is truly what fishing is all about.

When I go fishing with a buddy who isnt a die hard. They always ask me how I can stay on the lake or river for 6 hours when we arent catching anything. I try to explain to them that while catching a bass on every cast is great. It's really about the peace and serenity of being on the water. The sounds the smells the sights. I guess its something you either love or you dont.

The other thing for me is watching my 3 girls go to war with a 5 inch gill. To them it might as well be a 6 pounder. I also love the look in there eyes when I reel in a nice bass. I know theres at least 3 people in the world who think I am better than Kevin Van Dam.

I'll have to Ditto most of the other posts here - taking my special needs son out fishing for the day! Nothing better in life than to see him grinding goldfish into the rear deck carpet while trying to use them for bait to smiling ear to ear wet to the shoulder saying "dad - fish are slippery" chasing them around in the livewell.

Sounds like my one 'little' brother years ago when we were supposed to be bluegill fishing and I turn around to see him in the pond up to his waist trying to get bluegills to take worms right out of his hand. Which they proceeded to do.

Takein your best buds out on a lake they only have heard the name of. Not knowing the diffrence between a largemouth and a smallie. Teaching them how to use a softplastic bait and how to set the hook.

Getting them to catch their first fish in years, just to have them out fish you years latter and think they are the shoot.

Little things like this drives me to fish everyday, just so I can past on my knowledge.

i think its when you are using a type of lure or rig that u never used befor and u catch your firt fish on that lure or that rig . then u have confidence in something that a couple mins earlier didnt have any confidence in, just the feeling that you know that you have just improved and made your self that much better.

My best moment was when my 20 year old daughter asked to do a tournament with me. She wanted to now why I love fishing so much. I had her help me the night before. I went out purchased her shimano rods and reels of her own. Set them up and tied on lures. Left at 4 am for long ride to ramp. I couldn't get her to stop asking questions. I told tournament director I wanted to be last boat out for safety reason s with my daughter. Some of the othere guys through some cheap shots at me for having a girl in the boat in such a large tourney. My daughter quiclky put them in there place. We went out to our spots and on our third stop we hit them. Schools of 3 lber's were coming up as we neted each fish. She would hook a bass, I would drop a extreme bass tube flip the bail open. after netting her fish I told her to grab the rod and set the hook. After our fourth fish flopping aound in the boat she yelled thats enough lets get them in the live well. After 30 plus bass we headed back to wiegh in. As we entered the marina she leaned over and kissed me on the cheek. Dad I loved our day and I reallize why you love fishing so much. We came in 10th some great pics were taken. She slept all the way home. My little girl moved to Britsh Columbia last week She calls me or e-mails me to ask how the walleye are hitting.
Dad's little girl for ever :'(

I would have to say my best moment so far was last summer taking my wife out for the first time for Bass, she used to always go walleye fishing with her dad, so she wasnt used to the fight a bucketmouth gives. When that first fished slammed her senko she screamed with excitement. It was a good day even though she caught more then me.

The Sweetest thing .....

For me the sweetest thing is being a boater in the Fish-N-Fiends charity-fishing event for underprivileged children.
I organize this event each year and each year I go home with an enlighten feel for what we fishermen take for granted each day. When you see the smile on those kids faces it will stick with you for a long time. I sometimes loose touch with the reasons why I got into fishing... but one look on that kids face brings it all back.

My second choice would be .... You pull into the launch on a small inland northern Michigan lake on a cool foggy morning ... just as the sun peaks over the horizon.... You notice you have the lake all to yourself as you slip your boat quietly into the water.. You glide through the fog under trolling motor power .... The lake is so quiet you just don't want to spoke the fish... You reach down and break out your favorite top water and give it a toss ..... Just as you begin to work the bait a HUGE BASS explodes on it ... What a rush that always is ...

I was with you that day on that lake and the story ended like this.

Just as you begin to work the bait a Jet Ski came blasting by about 20 feet off the bow running over your favorite top water lure. Which ticked you off because they stopped making the lure 10 years ago.

Being that I am a smoker, the night before every tourney I find myself over checking to make sure I have enough "LUCKY CIGG'S". Those of you smokers know how important it is to have your "LUCKY SMOKES" with you on the boat.
Those mornings when the bite is tough, the sun is hot, and it seems like every largemouth in the lake has left. Countless times have I hooked my first and or biggest fish while enhaling on that "LUCKY CIGG".

Bad habit's are tough to break especially when they are "LUCKY" HABITS.

My wife would never go fishing with me. So one weekend after a couple of years of going out on the lake without her I was feeling pretty bad that I wasn't spending more time with her. I came home and told I decided to sell my boat so I could spend more time with her. She was excited beyond control. "But" before I sell the boat you must go at least one time with me before I sell. She says ok, but for no longer than 10 minutes. We go to Belleville, get up on plane and cruise the lake. After about 10 minutes she says "If you want to fish, go ahead and I'll watch" after another 10 minutes she says "Do you have another fishing pole" :). We end up being on the lake about 4 hrs. and on the way home she says "You know Thomas, you don't have to sell your boat" ;D ;D ;D She now reminds me every now and then, how the best investment I ever made was the purchase of my boat. Just can't get any better than that.

Getting home from a weekend of fishing on Lake St. clair (which was this past weekend. Neither one of my kids were there,no thats not it. I'm on the couch watching T.V. resting. All the sudden the door swings open and my wife and my kids come running in and say Daddy's home and come up and give me hugs and kisses. Sounds mushy but in my eyes it doesn't get any better than that. Of course also being able to enjoy the sport I love to try to do.  ;). Having a significant other that is so understanding. I could keep go on forever, but I'll stop now.

Been a while since I have lurked here so I am late on this one, none the less I would have to say the sweetest thing or moment about fishing or the new fishing year is the anxiety I get removing the tie downs, checking the drain plug and re checking the bow tie, and re checking everything all over again. The rush and ahhs of the engine turning over for the first time with the gray smoke, Just the engine temp water with the cold lake misty smoke is an awsome sight.

No matter how new the boat these things have to be done in some order and each year the rush of the feeling of wanting to hurry and be out there makes me feel as if I forgot to do something and yet want to still cast as fast as I can.

You ALL had some great things posted and many took me back to being a kid and wanting to be in a BOAT IN GENERAL, Every kid should have a chance to ride in a boat.

Lets continue to take'em even those maybe NOT our own.

GOOD LUCK FISHING EVERYONE !!!

I thought this was going to be easy, but alas ......

I'd say the day my 7 yr old insisted on using an open face, and after a few casts and some basic 1/4 oz wt hula grub coaching, I turn my back a few minutes - His higher octiv voice and a bent pool made me  look up to his face in slow motion and watch him bring in his own biggun....

Follow that up with the sunny morning we had on Erie:  2 mph wind, 6:30 am run across lake with 1 - 2 ft waves coming from behind, sun glossing the entire Eastern part of the lake, nothing but water as far as the eye can see, 67 mph and I'm feeling like a lab with his head and tongue out a car window !

After alot of thought and narrowing it down I couldnt dismiss either one. I just had a son this year and he turned 10 months so anytime I get out is a blessing.

First one is after a good weekend of fishing that monday going to work with bass thumb. Terrible, torn, scratched, and so bad you cant get the dirt out of it. Showing it off is the best trophy. PROOF IS IN THE THUMB. Unless its the winter time and I rub my thumb on the pigs mouth thats on my wall just for a quick fix.

Second is watching my fiance fish with a baitcaster. Nothing more beautiful than a woman that knows how to use one and can catch em.  Happy fishing to you all and Im glad I found this site.

my favorite thing on the water is a rod stopping hook set, felling a bass eat your bait and then making the earth turn a bit faster with the epic hook set is the best.

The smell and solitude of the lake on the first trip of the early spring.

I'm originally from Indiana and they have no closed season on bass.

My first trip was always in mid March and there would be very few

or no people around and usually a couple big bass would cooperate

making it an even better day

I'm not much of a fish eater, but fresh walleye or panfish tastes pretty good at times. Down in Mexico, we had fresh tilapia every day for lunch right on the shore of Lake Comedero. It was really good! We had some for dinner a couple times too. Fresh fish is always best. That was the only part I really liked about Boston when I went there.

casting to that really ridiculous spot that no one would ever attempt because a bass could never get in there.  setting the hook on the fish that actually was there, and pulling that fish out over 20 feet of cat tails and the tree limb i had to cast over to get there.
then, the good part...
watching my partner sit down and light a ciggarette because he is annoyed with the fact that i would even try such a thing let alone catch a hog.

There are so many of these "sweet things" but what about these two (and they may be posted already). Going down a shoreline like a muddy, over grown bayou, flipping a jig or worm into the jungle. Make a flip and your line JUMPS, knowing a bass (hopefully a bass) just inhaled your offering and with the swift swing of your rod, hoist a toad into the boat. OR... shooting a weightless worm such as a senko up to a sea wall or skipping it back alongside a boat in a marina and watching your line slowly sink... then suddenly jump and pick up speed knowing a fish is making off with your worm, allowing you to load up and get a good set, HOPING... that when you set that hook your rod doubles over with a big ol' bass on the other end. Doesn't thinking about these scenarios make you want to fish? I'm going nuts here. Just 3 more months... 3 more. ::)

that magical time when the sun just breaks the horizon on st clair and you actually stop fishing for the moment, taking a deep breath and revealing in how lucky you are to be experiencing it while others will never know the magic.

fishermen are blessed.

congrats to T-Bone who boated (accidently) his first big fish of the season yesterday, a 4lb smallie on a lake that has never boasted of smallmouths.

Well...
I just have to say here I, too, am glad I found this site - if for no other reason than to read this post...reading all the posts I am like 'yeah, Yeah, yeah, after each one - i like that too!!!
We are almost into the tourney season back here in NY and it has been a long long winter and a longer wetter, poor weathered spring.... But reading these posts has let me realize I am not the only crazy obsessed person in the world that loves fishing!!!
I remember one tourney - just a 'paper' tourney -  a boater didn;t sho up - for whatever reason, and rather than triple up (with all the confounding circumstances) I elected to stay on the shore.....<sigh>  The sound of those boats blasting off (and me NOT being on one of them!!!) was one of the WORST feelings I ever remember happening.  The funny thing was, when I opted to stay on the shore, I had NO idea how bad that was going to make me feel - the sounds of those motors reving up - boats on plane - spray flying - I almost screamed "HEY WAIT _ I CHANGED MY MIND_ COME BACK AND GET ME - I WAS ONLY KIDDING!!!!"......After the fact, I realized the combination of the excitement of the 'potential'  of the day, the anticipation of that first bite of the day - OMG....I'll never stay on the shore again - I was really down the rrest of the day.....I know better now....I'm a boater, at least in my primary club......<;
Thanks for a great read guys/people......

Hard saying... Great topic! Well, I have to say that it tickles me when I am fishing that tube and I put that perfect twitch or hop on it, I just know when that fish is gonna hit (some times the rod is already swinging before I feel the hit!) but as soon as that sensation of the bite happens.... (this is what really gets me) I swing that rod and hear the line whip through the water and air, and the magic feeling of that rod doubling over... Ahh those are the times that makes me feel all kinds of love for the sport

For me it's all about putting the boat in the water. I remember being a kid and begging my dad to let me help launch the boat. I literally studied him doing it for years and couldn't wait until I could do it. He finally trusted me with his boat when I was about 9. I was stoked and I nailed it. I still feel like that little 9 year old every time I put a boat in the water.
