Title: what do I need?
Post by: fowlmouth on August 05, 2008, 11:05:27 PM
Is the cabelas rod kit worth the price? supposedly comes with everything you need for 1 rod. That kit with the stand and motor looks like it would be easy enough to build my own.  I don't know the first thing about rod building but would like to give it a shot, I need to know everything I would need to get started.

I would start with this.

After that you need:

A wrapper, thread, masking tape, scissors, exacto knife, the list goes on.  I think starting with a rod kit is a good way to go.  It will allow you to get your feet wet and from there you can get more creative with experience.

cabelas kit would be good so you don't have buy any of the upfront "consumables" like the various epoxies, finishes, thread etc.
After the first rod, if you like it you will probably want to start looking into those types of things as there is an extensive variety of choices.

in addition to the kit, you will need some single edged razor blades (or exacto knife). I use a new blade per rod however for cutting thread neatly. Also some decent masking tape (3m).  A couple cheapie paint brushes, some rubbing alcohol and plenty of paper towels are necessary as well.

Check ebay for the rod drying motors & chucks.

get a 4-6rpm and making the v-blocks is easy.
