Title: Monday, July 9 - Chasing green
Post by: Revtro on July 10, 2018, 05:21:32 PM
Got out today with a true hero who served this country as a marine during Vietnam and beyond.  I was honored to take this old friend of mine out fishing today.  Our plan out of the gate was to get up in to the channels and find Largemouth.  We had mixed results.  In 4 hours we caught a dozen or so with a nice Smallie mixed in plus a couple of pike that made it to the boat, but not in.  Most of our fish came from the North Channel.  We tried the Sni but the terrain has dramatically changed due to the high water.  So last year's areas did not produce.

It was a great morning doing something a little different.  I know the Smallies are bigger on St. Clair, but every once in a while I like to tie on a Senko and Spinnerbait and go find Largemouth.  I know I'm probably crazy, but we had fun anyway.

Upside: A perennial drift in Algonac which hasn't produced much the past couple of years, produced a nice Smallie which had several followers.  So it was good to see fish there again.  If you want to know more about that spot, get Wayne Carpenter's first book.  I believe he discusses this particular spot.

Downside: Another perennial Largemouth spot did not produce at all.  I'm a bit mystified by it.  It always holds fish.  Also, the Sni is so different now, it's back to square 1.

If you want to do something a bit different, I recommend doing some Largemouth fishing.  I find it to be a lot of fun.  Go look for docks in the Sni for instance and see what you can get going.  Try the Canals along the Mile Roads or check out all the old pilings in Anchor Bay.

The BASS Old Timers division has a Largemouth Only event coming up  Was just talking about it today with a buddy.  Wondered where you could target them.  I will be on an Inland Lake that day.    I remember a couple Elite Guys fishing Largies only and weighing some nice sacks.

Great report.
