I want to get a marine radio on board, but I am not really hot on a fixed mount..Are the hand helds worth having or am I just throwing my money away??? Any reccomendations??

I picked up a Cobra handheld and tried it for the first time last weekend on LSC. On the 5 Watt setting it picked up talking well enough to understand a few miles away, maybe 4-5? It worked a lot better sitting on the front deck too, on the floor its reception was much more poor.
