Title: 175 merc efi cutting out, triton boat
Post by: capt charlie's charters on September 14, 2015, 11:12:45 PM
2002 triton / 175 merc efi began cutting out last year, like someone shutting off the gas and takes a day before it can be coached into starting again, then will run fine.   best I can recollect, its cut out four times and each when I was running in rough water, the most recent yesterday up on grand in alpena.   running along about 53mph against head wind, waves, and boat wake and suddenly like its running out of gas.  wouldn't start again and spent the day fighting the wind and doing the best I could with the trolling motor to salvage the tournament.  yep, put the muffs on this afternoon, little coaching and she fires right up.  last winter my mechanic ran all the tests, dyno and computer. plugs, lube, filter, impeller and thermometer.  compression good ign good.  been on st clair three times this year ( yeah, only 3 times, sucks )  long in interlochen, intermediate, Charlevoix, tipsico ( twice ) Alcona dam pond, long and grand in alpena and nothing till running on grand.   the bulb was weak and wouldn't pump up until today.   can't figure what, but my one thought it has to do with running on rough water and losing the gas flow, ANYONE ever had a similar problem ?  thanks  capt Charlie

UPDATE....heard from a buddy that had a 186 triton with a merc and recalls having a similar problem, found out that the weight of the wiring harness behind the driver's console after a time would become to much and eventually in rough water conditions bounce until it pulled down losing connection to the ignition.  ANYONE ELSE WITH A TRITON run into this situation ?

Did you try pumping the primer bulb after it quit.  My. 150 EFI had the same problem.  One of the bulb connections was loose and it would lose prime.  Pump the bulb and it would run fine.
