Title: Contest for the winning bait for the classic
Post by: LAPORTE on February 11, 2014, 05:16:59 PM
You only get one pick same as last year. The first person to pick the winning bait gets one sent to them from me. Last year it was a Jig the year before it was an KVD 1.5 crank (i think). So get you best guess posted and lets have some fun with this.

What was the size, weight and color of the Todd Faircloth you are talking about?  :P

I'm going with the lipless crankbait.  If I have to specify brand, I'd have to go with either a Red-Eye Shad or a Megabass Vibration-X.

My bad I thought we were picking who would win.  The winning bait will be an actual rattle trap.

From the look of the weather down there, I'm thinking minnow on a tip up.  Just because it hasn't been picked, square bill is my guess.

LiveTarget bait ball (only because it would justify your recent purchase of one or more of them)!

Well, well, well, will any one bait win. I doubt that any one will. Conditions will dictate what will be the bait for that day. I think a chatter bait will be a player, as well as some form of rattle trap, jig, and maybe even a big worm. The fish should be thinking about the move shallow, but with this weather they will be deeper and current related. They always position with the TVA. That being said, I am going with a deep diving crank bait.

if the water is still super cold (there was ice today there)
i'm going with the darkhorse - spoon or blade bait and a jerkbait

if it gets warm and sunny fast
swimbait or swimjig

either way i think a lipless will be a factor.

The new Smithwick Elite 8 jerkbait.
Near 60 degrees on Monday & staying in the 60's & almost 70 by Friday. They'll have 4-5 days of warm, stable weather before the Classic. Should make for a great event.

Spinnerbait.  No one else has picked it and it catches big fish.  They'll run it over the ledges and catch a bunch of 6 lb'ers.

His Classic lure arsenal included a Livingston Lures model being developed within the Pro Series. Not yet available to the public, it's a medium diver in a crawfish color. He also used a Rapala DT6 crankbait in the "demon" crawfish color

the first person to say crankbait was Mike S then Dan said a deep diving crank then tbone said Strike King so all three will be getting an Rapala DT6 crankbait in the "demon" crawfish color as soon as I can find them ...lol

just Pm me your address please

Do they still make the DT6?

I'm betting those Livingston crankbaits become available real soon...

I saw some other anglers catch a big ole bass by a bridge during the final practice day. I have no idea which bridge it was though. There's a number of them around the lake. When you get up at 2:45am, they all look alike.

Well so close
He was throwing a Yamamoto Chatter bait. But it wasn't the winning bait
I've heard he was after a crank in a red craw and the DT-6 just happened to be the one in the color that he had.
And then to think it's a Ikes ink color to boot.
I can see red working in the stained water, plus it's a great spring color
But the action of a DT-6 is more of a warmer water bait. But in stained water I can see how it worked
It moved more water then a tight action square bill that most were more then likely throwing.
