Hard to belive BASS would have the weigh in over an hour away in birmingham. Those fish will go through hell......bounce around all day in a livewell...go for a long ride to weigh in....five big guntersville bass in a bag in weigh in line is tough.....then what....another long trip back to guntersville? If i lived on that lake i would be furious .....spawning females going through all that...cant help the fishery at all.
It is a small number of fish compared to the population and they generally have state fisheries trucks at these events to handle the bass after weigh-in. I believe they also take precautions from the lake to the weigh-in but I will have to check on that. Being in the livewell on the road is not a lot different than being in the livewell on the lake in a chop.
I prefer to limit that stress put on bass as much as possible so I always appreciate seeing new ways to do weigh ins and more thought into treating the bass as well as absolutely possible. I think it is helpful to have people state their opinions publicly because that can affect change over time.
I was watching day 2 weigh in live on line, and Dave Mercer made the coment that after the day 1 weigh -in they had a 100% live release the previous night. Now that trip was over a hour each way.Its hard to believe, but I'll tip my hat if that did happen. I suppose the colder water might help but to the spawning females it still is a lot of stress.
