Giant River Otters of the Amazon
Add New Note
Next Image
Description: This Giant River Otter family picture shows Mom and Dad Otter with 5 babies before mom and dad dove and swam into the flooded brush, calling out to the alarm-calling babies. They all swim really fast. They have very sharp teeth. They eat lots of fish. They may be the top of The Amazon River food chain too depending on who you ask. They are regarded as the most dangerous animal along the river because they live in large family groups and defend their territory. The adult Giant River Otters can be 5 to 6 feet long, not a small otter like the ones we see in Michigan, but a big ole monster with teeth. They're pretty cool to see and don't seem too aggressive as long as you don't corner or push them too hard. This family kept swimming along and chattering at us while we watched them. They dive and swim a long ways under water in a hurry!
